In this Milestone One assignment, here are some points to keep in mind. Please
keep in mind also that this document is not changing or adding to information
in the rubric. I am taking the information in the rubric and just breaking it down
into steps that you can follow more clearly to get some insight into the things
that I am looking for in my grading. Once again, I am not changing the
rubric. My paragraph suggestions are at the end of each heading so you will
know how much to expect to put in the document.
I don’t need fluff or a great deal of unnecessary information that will not
benefit the project. You will not be graded on that and if anything points will be
deducted if too much fluff information is added. This exercise is also an
attempt to get you to be very brief and to the point about what you are writing
as well without adding information that does not add value to the analysis
report. Stick to the facts and do not interject anything that you don’t have
information for.
This is the first draft of a business systems analysis that will go in your Final
Project assignment. I will grade on this as much as normal but a tad bit lighter
to provide room for growth and learning for the Final Project.
Although the document lists it as a practice opportunity, I do grade it and the
grade counts toward your final overall grades.
The Decision Matrix is not required for this assignment but it would be a smart
idea to start completing it as you do this assignment. Actually, the completion
of the matrix will help you with this assignment. It will help you to get your
thoughts organized for completion of Milestone One.
Read the final project case scenario carefully and highlight the important areas
that you are working on. Then read the rubric in its entirety. STOP and do that
right now and then come back to this document and review the rest of my
information.
In this milestone, you will break down your report into 3 main sections:
Introduction, Business Requirements and Competitors and Technology.
Review the competitors listed in the final project case scenario to see how they
are using the technology you have chosen from the list provided.
Remember, you are writing this for the business owner, not me. So you are
pretending that the business owner will read this report. So you are writing to
a business owner that may or may not understand the types of technology you
are referring to so write to his level.
Introduction:
In the introduction section, you probably want to have 2 subheadings. I will
address them here.
Problem Statement – this is where you state the problem that the business
owner is seeking to solve. You will get that details from the problem
scenario. You will start this by doing a short introduction of the company and
what they do. You should then go into the problem as outlined in the
scenario. Make sure that you are addressing the ultimate goal of the business
in this section as well. Please make sure that you are including the seven
technological requirements here as well as that is a part of the problem that the
business owner would like solved. This should be no more than 2 paragraphs.
Introduction of New Technology – in this section of the introduction is where
you will want to identify and briefly describe the two technologies that you will
research for the client in your business systems analysis. The selection for the
technologies are in the final project case scenario. You are not just naming the
two you will select here, you are briefly describing what that technology does
or is as well. This is not about how you would use the technology for this
business, this is simply identifying and defining what this technology is so the
business owner would know if he is not familiar. This should only be one short
paragraph.
Business Requirements:
In the business requirements section, you will want to use 3 subheadings. I will
address them here.
Objectives – in this section you will explain the objectives of the company to
undertake this project to integrate new technology. What would the project
accomplish when it is completed and how does it support the goal of the
business? That is the two main questions you should address. You should be
taking a look at the goals, the seven technological requirements and the two
technologies that you are planning on using when addressing the
objectives. You are not copying them here but surmising what the objectives
are based on those items. This should be only 1 paragraph.
Project Description – this section will explain the purpose of the
project. Address these questions and you should cover everything. What does
the business need to do to satisfy the objectives you stated above? What are
the end results that the project is working towards? What is the importance of
the business owner considering the implementation of new technology? You
should provide a high-level overview of some of the things that happen in a
project. Such as project planning, project scope, evaluation of current systems
to see what upgrades would be needed for e-commerce, how will the new
technologies affect the seven requirements, what are competitors doing that
make an impact. This should take 1-2 paragraphs. Remember, no fluff and in
interjecting guesses of things that are not factual like needing to build a
website, hire a company to code, new employees, etc. You don’t know enough
about the project to be able to include those things.
Technological Requirements – this section outlines what the key technological
requirements are that will be required to solve this problem for the
client. What specifically does the technology need to have the capability of
performing for the client? Reviewing the way your competitors use the
technology you have chosen is a good start to see how the technology will be
able to perform for this client. You should review the seven technological
requirements and use the two technologies you selected to show how it would
answer the requirements to reach the goal. This should be about 2
paragraphs. One for each technology that outlines what technological
requirements each technology satisfies. You should really do the decision
matrix to help with this.
Competitors and Technology:
In the competitors and technology section, you will want to use 3
subheadings. I will address them here.
Technology One – in this section you will focus on one of the two technologies
you selected using the competing company that you selected. You will give a
brief description of what the company does and how it uses the technology that
you are talking about here to support its business in general. You want to
specifically hone in on one of the technologies you selected but use one of the
companies in the final project case scenario to show how they are using
it. Please provide some very specific examples. Also, make sure to discuss how
our company would benefit from utilizing a similar technology in our store for
comparison. This maybe about 1-2 paragraphs.
Technology Two – you want to do the same thing you did for the first
technology you selected above but you are doing it for, of course, another
technology from the list. Use a different competitor with the second
technology. Once again you want to specifically hone in here and provide
specific examples. Also, make sure to discuss how our company would benefit
•

from utilizing a similar technology in our store for comparison. This may also be
1-2 paragraphs.
Benefits of Technology – in this section you want to look at everything you
outlined for both technologies and select one specific way that one of the
competing companies you reviewed above is benefitting from that
technology. So what you are doing here is basically giving accolades about how
one of the technologies you have selected has been so great for one for the
competitors. It may have improved a bottom line or enhanced the popularity of
the store or something of that nature. In addition, you are now to look at the
benefit for your client and talk about what the possible benefits could be for
your company if they utilized the same technology. This maybe 2 good
paragraph.
Here are some of the formatting guidelines you should look at for your
paper. This is a formal APA paper. I will list some resources that you can utilize
to help you to understand how to write a paper as well as reaching out to the
Writing Center.
Your rough draft should be 3-4 pages long. With the paragraph count that I
have outlined in this document, your paper should not exceed 4 pages in
length.
Your paper should be double spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font and 1-inch
margins all the way around.
Make sure that you are running spell check and reading your paper afterward
for grammar mistakes.
Make sure that you are including a cover page, reference page and are using
citations in the body of the document. If you do not understand the differences
in references and citations please refer to one of the links I am adding below or
reach out to the Writing Center.

introduce the problem that your business is facing. Then, you will determine the business requirements for solving that problem, including the requirements
that any new technology needs to meet.
Your goal in the final project is to establish an e-commerce presence, but you must improve the current technology first. Use the Decision Matrix document as
you conduct your research for assistance organizing your thoughts. (You will submit the completed decision matrix in Milestone Two.) For additional resources
on developing the decision matrix, refer to:
Decision Matrix: What It Is and How to Use It: This article defines the decision matrix and discusses how leaders evaluate and prioritize all of their

also explain how a company uses the two technologies that you are investigating to determine if the technology may be appropriate for your business to
use. Remember that a list of competing companies was provided to you in the final project case scenario.
A. Technology One: Select one company in the same industry as your own that uses this technology. Briefly describe what that company does and
how it uses this technology to support its business in general. Include specific examples.
