the house means there is no connection with her father. This is the primary
reason why Kathy wanted the house back.
IB: The collision between Kathy and Colonel Behrain eventually leads to tragedy.
A. The collision occurs because not of them want to converse with the other party and
listen to each other’s side of the story with an aim to come up with a solution.
1. individually, Kathy did not care to understand why the house was essential to
Colonel Behrain

son as well as provide for his family.

Two quotes from the House of Sand and Fog
Behrain said in he dying letter “Soraya-joon, I have done all that I could. Do not be sorry for us.
Your mother and I await you upon your return. We love you more than we have loved life after
your dear brother, name your first son. Live here if you like, but if you sell, it takes no less than
one hundred thousand dollars. ~Bawbaw” (Perelman, 2003). The above was written by Behrain
in his goodbye note to his daughter as he was sure a tragedy was waiting by the time she got it he
was sure that he and his wife would be dead.
Behrani says“…if there is no snake at your feet, do not lift rocks at the side of the
road.” (Perelman, 2003). The phrase means that one should not go looking for trouble when there
is none or when it can be avoided. If Kathy had accepted the situation or at the very least handled
it legally, the tragedies would have been avoided.

The House of Sand and Fog as Tragedy
HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG

Q1
When Hegel came up with this idea, he was on the idea that tragedy stems
from conflict from legitimate institutions. In our case here in the film, we have
got two people who qualify in the essence of two rights. One of them being
Colonel Behrain, who acquired the house on a third of its market value from the
county action. He had every right on the house as despite buying it at a subsided
cost, he had acquired it the right way. He did not take it lightly when Kathy
wanted him to give back the house to him. If anything, he asked for four times
the money he had bought the house from the county auction to sell it. As for
Kathy, it was an honest mistake when she did not make the payments of the
house as she was sure that the bills were taken care of. Therefore, when they
took away her house, she was hurt and not aware of the defect that she had
incurred.
Q2
When she is informed of the unpaid business taxes, she argues that the house
was not on any taxes as she had acquired it from her father, and no taxes were
needed. Kathy goes ahead to argue that a few months ago, she had even signed a
document saying that the house had no taxes to pay. Having inherited it from her
father, she was sure that no payments were pending. She is presented as careless
and ignorant. That morning before the eviction, we see that her house is
disorganized, and she has mail that she has not opened for so long. The house she
had inherited from her father, and it marked a connection between him and her.
Having lost it without prior notice was hurting as well as shocking for her. Not
HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
3
having the house meant that she had no connection to her father anymore, and in a
way, it was a show of failure to her father in her part. She cherished the house as it
reminded her of him, and not having it was a reminder that she had let him down.
Q3
Colonel Behrain saw the notice of the action in a newspaper and decided to
acquire it. Luckily for him, the payment was a fraction of the market value of the house
as it was being actioned. He bought it from the county of that area. Before he had come to
America, back in Iraq, he was a soldier, and that meant that he was always on a lifeline.
Having left the country and migrated to a new one, he needed to make money and find
ways to sustain his family. In a way, he had been forced out of his country. When he saw
the house at the subsided cost, he saw it as an opportunity to make good for himself. He
planned to renovate the house to make a few changes that would increase its market
value, and then sell it at a higher price than he had bought it. It would help to get more
money and continue saving for college education for his son. To him, the house was a
means to an end.
Q4
Hegel stated that two characters in a tragedy are responsible for it, and their
stubbornness leads them not to notice their flaws. The two of them were too selfish,
and that was their similar flaw. None of them wanted to sit for a minute and think of
what the other person wanted or rather what they wanted. The colonel never cared
as to why the house was so important to Kathy, and at the same time, Kathy was not
concerned as to why Colonel had bought the house and the reasons as to why he
made the changes and planned on reselling it. Both were driven by what they
HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
4
wanted: Kathy by her need for her connection to her dad and the fact that her
mother was coming to visit soon and Colonel by the fact that he needed the money
for his son’s college education as well as sustaining his family.
Q5
In most cases, we bring ourselves to our downfalls may be due to ignorance,
selfishness, or any other reason. In the house of sand and fog, it was no different. If
anything, the film ends in a tragedy, which would have been avoided if the two
heroes had been less selfish and self-centered. In our case, the two of them collided
and in a way, led to their downfall. When the two meet, it involves conflict due to the
house. After the house is seized and sold, it does not take long before Kathy goes
back to drinking thou she was in recovery before. Also, she tries committing suicide
several times. Since the seizure of the house, her life has been going downhill. As for
Colonel, he manages to maintain himself despite the insistence from Kathy that he
gives her back the house. However, the house in a way does cost him not only his life
but his families too. He loses his son from a shot out with the police who thought
Esmail was attacking Lester. After this, he cannot bear it and ends up committing
homicide and suicide.
Q6
When Nietzsche came up with Apollonian and Dionysian human nature, he
was referring to how different people act in certain instances. He compares the
former with being rational and the latter with irrationality. The two traits have been
showcased in our heroes in one way or the other. During the running of the film,
Kathy is presented as the Dionysian because of her different traits and behaviors.
HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
5
First, she does not accept that she has lost the house, and how Colonel had acquired
it was legal. All she cares about is getting her house back. As for Behrain, he is very
rational at the beginning. If anything, he has a plan for the future. Even when he
notices Kathy trying to commit suicide, he helps her and allows her to spend the
night in the house. However, after the death of his son, he turns to Dionysian as he
kills his wife by poisoning her and later suffocates himself.
Q7
In the film, the Dionysian overwhelms the Apollonian in colonel Behrain.
Throughout the Film, the colonel has managed to maintain a rational character
where rational thoughts rule him. Even when Kathy finds herself in danger, he helps
her despite the conflict that she has caused. Nonetheless, this all changes at the end,
where he blames himself for the death of his son and ends up killing his wife and
himself.
Q8
Notably, both heroes in the film have a moment of recognition. When Kathy
tries to kill herself by shooting herself with Lester’s gun,
Behrain takes her in,
and they offer her a place to sleep. It signifies the act of kindness from the family
despite the problems that she has caused them. Her recognition is seen when she
finally admits that the house is no longer hers. When Behrain watches his son get
shot and later learns of his death, he realizes that the house is not worth him losing
his family, and he realizes the consequences of his actions as well as he writes that
letter to his daughter.
