Instructions
Your task this week is to prepare a chart that compares and
contrasts narrative and phenomenological designs.
Your chart must address the following:
Element
Philosophical roots
Basic assumptions
Terminology differences
Means by which data is collected and
material is gathered
Purposes
Specific challenges unique to each
methodology
Ethical differences in the participantresearcher relationship.
Narrative Method
Phenomenological
Method
Conclude your chart with a summary that focuses on essential
features, which would be useful in comparing and contrasting
these two methodologies. Finally, using the research topic of
interest you submitted in Week 1, discuss whether either of
these qualitative designs would be appropriate to use to
research that topic.

Describe Phenomenological Inquiry
Phenomenological research is focused on a particular phenomenon or issue that
individuals may be involved in, currently addressing, or living with at the current point
in their life.
Phenomenological research can be somewhat controversial because information
provided by the participants can be misinterpreted. This design uses interpretive
description to explain a particular aspect of the world or a phenomenon while
acknowledging the complexity of a participant living life within that phenomenon
because more than one participant is included in a study.
The method attempts to explain the meaning of an experience shown as it is described
in the language of the participant – so because of this quotes from individuals under
study are an expected part of this design. The data for this research then becomes a
narration, which results in a rich description of the phenomenon that is being studied.
The information that is compiled is expressed from a variety of perspectives. This can
be difficult to do as we as researchers are asking participants to be introspective and
the first person point of view is primary in this type of design. Many critics of this type
of methodology believe that introspection and using first person data is notorious for
being unscientific (Vermersch, 1999). Some of the techniques of this method include
interviewing, focus groups, and writings from participants.
Be sure to review this week’s resources carefully. You are expected to apply the
information from these resources when you prepare your assignments.

Summary
According to the factors outlined in the table, it is evident that the methods are different in
most of their aspects. To begin with, Narrative design involves storytelling about an experience a
person had while Phenomenology deals with explaining one aspect about an experience, but it is
not limited by time of the region. Additionally, the narrative method can concentrate on the
research about a person’s life without aiming at simplifying while Phenomenology design deals
with understanding the spirit of human understanding via people. Another difference between the
two is that narrative design involves a context, protagonist and an outline of activities while the
phenomenological method is designed to answers about the experience that individuals have on a
specific phenomenon. Furthermore, the two designs collect data differently where Narrative design
narrates stories of samples via interviews that involve 1 and 25 individuals while Phenomenology
design collects information from the first person as the source where it collects from 8-12
individuals or few.
More so, it is evident that in narrative design researchers purposefully follow different
methods rather than conceptual, methodological and theoretical interpretation while in
phenomenology, design researchers start from the concentrated set of theoretical views and try to
postpone any fixed hypothetical ideas. At the same time the objective of the narrative method is to
concentrate on the method in the intellect of solving issues, elaborating the issue in the selected
domain, the activities conducted to establish it and their connecting impacts while the objective of
phenomenology design is to clear expressiveness without experiencing any interference from the
associate. Again, the two differ in that narrative design cannot involve phenomenology design but
phenomenology design can incorporate narrative design. Last but not least the two designs have

one sect in common as they are contextualized in nature. In this case, the two designs cannot be
used together since each is suitable for researching topics from a particular industry (McLeod,
2001. For instance, the narrative is best for social science, while the phenomenology method is
best for qualitative nursing studies. All the aspects recorded show that the two designs are different
even in the way they collect data and the number of individuals involved in each design differs.
Research on music and the mindset
The topic of my interest in music and the mindset. In this topic, the best method that can
be used to study is the phenomenological method. This is because the design is concerned with the
outcome of experience while the topic is concerned with how music affects a person’s mindset.
Also, the phenomenological design is concerned with the issue about the care and this topic is
concerned with how music affects individuals’ psychological health.
