Santa Monica College Ceaseless Memory Paper Identify and describe the given art work. Try explaining why you think that artwork is the most appealing to you. Explain which formal elements or principles of composition were used in its creation. Lita Albuquerque conceives of her work as “metaphysical fantasy.” Unlike much of
Albuquerque’s other work, which often makes use of earthly and cosmic references or
symbols, Ceaseless Memory creates a metaphysics in completely abstract form. Against the
intense, ethereal blue background are two monumental “splashes” of electric red. The optical
resonance between the two colors produces a visual vibration or glow. Both on the painting
surface and in the viewer’s eye, the “ceaseless memory” of this optical resonance is
complemented by the delicate, powdered pigment on the work’s surface, which recalls the
ephemeral fragility of dreams.
