Suggestions:

the episodes of Forensic Files.

Good abstracts will address each of the following. Good abstracts will spend no more than two

sentences addressing each of the following considerations, and thus be no longer than ten sentences total:

1) What crime am I researching—when was it committed, who perpetrated the crime, and what were its most notable features?

2) What is the first theory I will apply to this crime, and what are the key

components of this theory? (Must be a theory we will cover during weeks 2 and 3.)

3) What is the second theory I will apply to this crime, and what are the key components

of this theory? (Must be a theory we will cover from weeks 4 and 5.)

4) What is the third theory I will apply to this crime, and what are the key components of this theory? (Must be a theory we will cover from week 6 onward.)

5) What evidence am I focusing on in determining which theories are not persuasive/persuasive in relation to this crime?

Then, find ONE journal article for EACH of the theories noted above that you can use to help you explain the theories. Give the citations for the these three journal articles below:

Writing Workshop #2

Overview of this part of the paper project: In your paper, you should introduce your paper and state your thesis (approximately half a page), briefly describe the crime (approximately one page) and then thoroughly describe the first theory you are reviewing and applying to your crime. In your description, you should address:

-the theory’s origins

-what the theory assumes about human behavior

-what it states are the causes of crime/how it models crimes occurring

-what kinds of crime it explains very well

-what kinds of crime it cannot explain

-whether it explains crime on the micro or macro level and

-how it argues crime can be prevented.

This description of the theory should be 1 page.

After the description, you should apply the theory’s causes/models and assumptions, and proposed prevention mechanisms to the crime you described in the first part of your paper. This should take about a page, and should end with you assessing whether or not the theory you are utilizing explains the crime you described and justifying your answer. In your description of your theory, you must cite an academic journal article.

Remember, for this part of the paper you can only use theories we covered in weeks 2 and 3.

Refer to the “Suggested Readings” in the syllabus for academic journals where scientific tests of the theories can be found. You must use theories from our textbooks AND may not use Wikipedia or encyclopedic sources. You may use the Internet for research. You may be requested to attach the articles you use to your final paper.

Focus on the schedule below

The reading requirements in which you should select your theories:
