Essay 2 + Checklist: For this essay assignment, you have two options to choose from: (a) Write a classification paper OR (b) Write a definition paper.

For your topic, think about what you classify in your job, your major subject, or—if you do not have a job or a major—in your favorite subject, and write a classification/division essay about it. (Nobody is allowed to write about social media! Please come up with an interesting, stimulating topic.)

c. Your essay must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document. If you
submit another version, your paper will lose one grade per day until I
receive the Word version.
d. Your essay should reflect that you understand the basics of
classification/division.
e. Do NOT turn this essay into a research paper. I need you to write
from your OWN experience, not the experience and research of
others.
f. However, if you are using information from outside sources, you
must cite your source(s) based on MLA rules with in-text citations
and a corresponding Works Cited page. Not doing so will be
considered plagiarism.
g. Format the essay and the citations based on the “Formatting
Documents in MLA” handout and the short video in Module 2.
h. Use the Checklist to eliminate as many mistakes as you can.
i. Submit the Checklist (can be a PDF) as a separate document in the
same assignment dropbox where you submit your essay. Failure to
submit the Checklist will result in a 20-point, 2-grade deduction.
(When you open the document, you will find instructions on how to
fill in the document.)
j. See the “Writing Center and Smarthinking” section of the Syllabus
for information on how to get an additional 5 points on all your
papers.
8. Please note that the plagiarism-detection software is turned on for this
assignment. You can check your own score via the “Originality Score”
dropbox. NOTE: The originality score of any assignment in this class
CANNOT exceed 25%.
