Florida Atlantic University Lesson 7 Equal Employment Opportunity Discussion Lesson 7
Shakiena
No, an employer shouldn’t have the right to choose employees without government interference. HRM decisions and actions are critical to ensuring that the organization hires and keeps the right people. I think it’s important for employer’s to ensure that equal employment opportunities exist for job applicants and current employees. Decisions regarding who will be hired, for example, or which employees will be chosen for a management training program must be made without regard to race, sex, religion, age, color, natural origin, or disability. Exceptions can occur only when special circumstances exist.
Trying to balance the “shoulds and should-not’s” of these laws often falls within the realm of equal employment opportunity (EEO) initiatives and affirmative action programs. EEO strives to ensure that anyone has an equal opportunity based on his or her qualifications. Many organizations operating in the U.S. have affirmative action programs to ensure that decisions and practices enhance the employment, upgrading, and relations of members from protected groups such as minorities and females.
Operating within legal constraints, U.S. managers are not completely free to choose whom they hire, promote, or fire. Although laws and regulations have significantly helped to reduce employment discrimination and unfair employment practices., they have, at the same time, reduced management’s discretion over HR decisions.

The HRM (Human Resource Management) process functions as employment planning. It is the hiring of staff through the process of recruiting, it is the reduction of force through downsizing, and selection.
Currently, HRM is bound by both state and federal laws. State laws vary from state-to-state, but compliance to federal laws is mandatory across the United States. Federal laws ensure that there is equal opportunity to employment regardless of race, sex, age, color, country of origin, or disability. There are some exceptions, though. For instance, if a position requires a lot of physical effort (walking, running, heavy lifting, etc.) and someone is confined to a wheelchair, it is acceptable for a company to deny employment to someone with a physical disability that would keep them from executing the responsibilities of the job. If, however, someone with a disability is able to execute all the components of job responsibilities, the disability cannot be used to deny the candidate the position. Affirmative Action programs enhance the employment, retention and promotion of members of protected groups, like minorities and women. The goal of trying to balance the hiring process with these Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Affirmative Action programs is to ensure that all people with equal qualifications have equitable opportunities.
Though some of these programs have proven to be less effective than others, I believe these programs are important and go a long way in protecting the rights of numerous people, with particular emphasis on minorities and other protected groups of people.
Lesson 8
Shakiena
Opportunities,constraints and demands are all related to the stress directly.Stress is a condition in which a person faces opportunities and demands with certain constraints related to his desire when outcome is uncertain. Opportunities are related to stress because Stress is a dynamic condition, and it exists when an individual is confronted with an opportunity, constraint or demand related to what he or she desires, and for which the outcome is perceived to be both uncertain and important. There’s opportunity in stress, and that’s a good thing because it offers potential gain. Too much stress can also have tragic consequences. In Japan, there’s a stress phenomenon called karoshi, which is translated as death from overwork.
Opportunities are a combination of different circumstances at a given time that offer a positive outcome, if taken advantage of. The key word in this definition is ‘circumstances’, because opportunities are said to be external.
The definition of a constraint is something that imposes a limit or restriction or that prevents something from occurring. An example of a constraint is the fact that there are only so many hours in a day to accomplish things.
An example of stress is the pressure to finish three large projects by the end of the day. Another example of stress is discomfort and pain in your arms from ccarrying too heavy of an item, or example of stress is hypertension, which can result from a reaction to a situation in which a person feels threatened or pressured.
Examples of life stresses are: divorce, the death of a loved one, loss of a job, or an illness.
Joshua;
Often times, stress is placed upon employees of a company through change. Many employees would feel opposed to change due to uncertainty, pre-existing habits, or concern over personal loss. They can experience physical, behavioral , and/or psychological stress which will all have an impact on how they perform their jobs. Opportunities can create stress when a worker becomes so worried over whether or not he/she can be promoted, for example. If word circulates that someone will be promoted in the next coming weeks (an opportunity), people may become stressed as they themselves want the promotion, but have no control over the situation. Constraints, both work and home life related, can also place stress on someone if they are so worried about not being able to do something that they feel is necessary. For example, if work has to be done in a particular time constraint, and someone doesn’t know if they’ll finish in time, this could place immense stress upon them. Lastly, demands are closely related to stress as well. Demands can come from a boss/manager, children/spouse, and many others. When all of these different demands clash together, it can be extremely difficult for a person to focus on what is most important, and thus, they become highly stressed out. Stress is harmful to any individual because it can create unwanted tensions, feelings of anxiety, changes in living patterns, physical deterioration and much, much more. It is of crucial importance that people try and do everything they can to remove potential stressors from their life.
Lesson 9
Romar; Companies should realize that employees are part of the the business and hurting employees for financial gain is also the same as harming the business. Business won’t last long without having trustworthy employees that choose to stick around, employees build the company and with such a large group of people working together to solve whatever problems the company runs into then the company will have a high chance of solving them and making it out profitable. Therefore it is important for managers to oversee their employees and to create a safe working environment in which employees can feel safe. I think that the statement ” creating environments where performance is enabled ” means that if the environment is not structure correctly to the point were workers can achieve the tasks before them, then workers will not be able to be productive with their time and result in a loss of money for the overall company. It is the manager’s job to lead and make it easy for the employees to do their job and this includes making sure employees aren’t feeling sick or feeling depressed and stressed. An example of having an unsafe work environment would be companies back before the 1930s, companies still used child labor back then and the environment that these children had to work in were in humane. Children were preferred over adults because they were small and could easily fit into small places and some children between 10 and 14 had to work in mines to break up coal in exchange for about 10 percent of what an adult would earn if they performed the same job.
Marcus;
I think that this statement means that companies should have a goal of creating the best possible working environment, but only in terms of getting work done. It does not create an environment that is motivating and stress free which could then even create job satisfaction for all employees as a result. The ultimate goal of a company in regards to its employees should be for them to feel good about performing to the best of their ability. When a company only prioritizes performance and not how employees feel, they are not setting themselves up for success. My reaction to the statement is that this type of mindset likely does not work well for many businesses. This mindset likely leads to many employees feeling stressed and uncomfortable in the workplace. I disagree with this statement. Job satisfaction leads to many positive benefits for a company. This includes the following: lower rates of turnover, lower rates of absenteeism, better performance, and less dissonance. Cognitive dissonance is any incompatibility or inconsistency between attitudes or between behavior and attitudes. It is important that the workplace does not contain any cognitive dissonance. Unnecessary disagreements that can be easily avoided have no place in the work environment. It is important for managers to have emotional intelligence and for them to try and use their emotional with their employees. This can help make sure that all employees stay satisfied and stress free. Lastly, performance in the workplace goes up as job satisfaction goes up, so managers should ultimately attempt to achieve job satisfaction which will improve performance.
Lesson 10
Keyona; a group is define as a number of people or things that are located close together or are considered or classed together. a team is define as a group of people that come together as join forces to achieve a common goal. the main difference is that team’s strength or focus depends on the commonality of their purpose and how the individuals are connected to one another, while a group can come from having a large number of people or a cohesive willingness to carry out a focused action. In other words work teams are a collection of accomplished people coming together for a common goal that needs completion, and a work group is a number of individuals forming a unit for a reason or a cause. In the work place a work group may or may not work in the same department. some examples of work teams are:
football teams: the primary goal of a football team is to grow better and better as each day goes by, score goals, advance to next level, win championships and set records.
work groups can be either formal or informal. some examples of formal groups are teams, committees or training groups. some examples of informal groups are:
neighborhood groups,
social groups- these groups established to meet the needs of a particular sector e.g. age group, gender or interests( e.g. music or acting). examples include women’s institute and scouts.
self-help groups: such groups are often established to work through particular emotions or to provide support for people with a certain illness, e.g. helping to overcome an addiction such alcoholics or drug addicts.
Lexi; All work teams are work groups, but not all work groups are work teams is most definitely a statement I agree with. To better understand this, I would describe a work team as a group of individuals who work together towards a common goal and I would describe a work group as a group of individuals who don’t necessarily work together (but they can) and may even work separately to produce a common goal. So, if you look at it like this when it comes to my business and line of work, my entire staff and I are a work group because we work together and separately to produce a common goal. But, as a whole we are not a work team because there are different divisions of us. So, if you look even further into those divisions we use the analogy of a car. The car is our work group. But, there are separate features inside the work group that are work teams like the wheels, engine and programming. The wheels are our vet techs who make everything happen. The programming are our vets who tell everyone the process and procedures to keep moving and the engine are the managers who help to make sure everything and everyone is running smoothly. So, all together those are our work teams but not our work groups. That’s why this statement makes sense to me and I agree with it. Not every group can be a team but every team can be a group as a whole.
