This assignment is worth 250 points. It is due on Sunday, June 7th. This essay assignment intends to help students
think critically about material they have encountered in their studies and to express clearly their thoughts about

SPECIFIC TASK:
First, watch the video “Life and Debt” in class or on Amazon Prime. Additionally, you should study the article by
Tony Weis.
Your specific task for this assignment will be to respond to the video “Life and Debt” and the article by Tony
Weis, while taking into careful consideration the material we have been studying in our assigned textbook. You
should be responding with a well-organized, thoughtful brief essay. The main part of your response should center
on responding to the following:
“To what extent can one make a coherent and persuasive argument that what the film and the
article present us with is an example of the active underdevelopment of Jamaica by neocolonial
forces?”
In this context, consider the role that multilateral institutions played in the dramatic changes that transformed the
social, political, and economic conditions in Jamaica. How can a country like Jamaica respond to these challenges?
What do we learn about how neoliberal policies and multilateral organizations operate and whom they ultimately
benefit? Make sure that you demonstrate just how closely you watched the video and read the article.
This should be your critical response to the video and the article. Use your own words and your own arguments.
This brief critical response essay should be just 4-5 typed pages in length, double-spaced, with one-inch margins,
using the 12-point Times New Roman font. Make sure that you carefully check the essay for spelling and
grammatical errors, and that the finished product is polished and represents your absolutely best effort. You can
