OBJECTIVES:
English 1102 continues many of the objectives of English 1101 with a special emphasis on
developing research skills and information literacy:
•
•
•
•
•
develop a persuasive argument on a topic you have explored through research and writing and
tailored to a specific audience;
gather, discuss, and analyze a variety of sources for a variety of audiences;
respond to the writing of classmates and incorporate consistent drafting and revision into your
own writing process;
incorporate an accurate citation style into your writing and research;
craft sentence-level prose that effectively conveys your ideas.
THERE IS AN EXPECTATION OF ORIGINAL WORK. If a student borrows or incorporates ideas
which are not his/her own, he/she MUST cite those ideas properly. Failure to do so will result in
PLAIGARISM and an ‘F’ for the assignmen

the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, P.L. 101-336 (July 26, 1990), as amended by
P.L. 110–325 (September 25, 2008) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, not
merely to achieve legality, but to foster academic potential through individualized plans
tailored to the particular needs of students with disabilities. Students with documented

the student. You may schedule an appointment by contacting Ms. Joy Norman in the Office of

HOUSEKEEPING:
Although this is an online class, you are expected to participate with it regularly. Please log into
Cougarview every day to see what is expected for the day and week. I will offer work one week
in advance, but no more.
You get one opportunity to turn something in late. Use it wisely!
COMMUNITY:
Due to the nature of this course, there will be many differing opinions and attitudes about the
topics of discussion. Please conduct yourself with integrity and maintain the utmost respect for
others and for the process. Also, there will be times when we are watching or discussing topics
that are explicit or R-rated. I expect the discussions to happen with maturity and respect for
others’ boundaries. Also, I expect you to come prepared for class; watch the assigned episodes
and read the assignments. It also means that distracting or disruptive behavior will not be
tolerated
GRADE DISTRIBUTION AND EXPLANATION:

Pre-writing Assignments
20%

25%
Peer Review/Workshops
15%
I will not answer questions about your grade unless you have logged into CougarView/D2L first.
Also, I will not answer questions about any of the information on this syllabus unless you have
read it here first.
Writing Assignments:
There are three major assignments for this class: a reader response essay, an analysis essay,
and a synthesis project. The expectation of length is to be followed carefully and
considerately. A detailed criteria sheet will be distributed separately.
Prewriting Assignments
For each writing assignment you will be required to submit and outline and a Works Cited page
to Cougarview. These are to follow the standard format and will reflect the readings and
instruction from class.
Discussions:
Your discussion grade is calculated using your engagement with class discussions. In order to
earn the full 15%, you must answer the discussion prompt fully and respond thoughtfully and
CRITICALLY to your classmates’ replies. “I agree with …..” is not really what I’m looking for here.
Peer Review:
This grade includes all peer reviews and visits to the ACT. You must participate with your
partner in a timely and respectful manner. There are few exceptions to this.. This grade also
includes the mandatory visits to the ACT.
Academic Center for Tutoring (Writing Center)
You are required to interact with the Writing Center AT LEAST ONCE (1) this semester (details to
follow). You will submit your receipts to the ‘Assignments’ folder by logging into MyCSU and
accessing the reports. From there you can take a screenshot or copy and paste your tutor’s
remarks. Upload that document into the folder labeled “ACT Receipts.” I will not accept these
reports via email.
SUBMISSION PROCESS:
For every assignment that contains a written essay component, you will submit the finalized
product to the Dropbox menu on Cougarview. Points will be deducted if these items are not
submitted by the posted due date.
Please have all technical issues resolved so you can stay informed. “I didn’t get the email” is not
an excuse for ANYTHING. I will periodically have (optional) Zoom meetings. While these aren’t
necessarily mandatory, they will often be a helpful tool in understanding my expectations in
this class.
READING AND ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE:
I reserve the right to change this schedule at any time, so please check CougarView, Remind
