From the nursing perspective, the Internet of Things (IoT) is a great tool for gathering health data in a wide variety of situations and healthcare settings. With IoT technology the possibilities are endless. “Imagine the potential of this kind of capability combined with care anywhere, personal device data, and EHR’s.” (Nelson & Staggers, 2018). The data gathered with IoT can be very useful in real-time for patient care as well as for tracking trends and statistics for future use.

The World Health Organization (WHO), has collaborated with world leaders and identified seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The goals are their “vision for a world free of poverty, hunger, disease, and want.” (WHO, 2020). The hope is that by the year 2030, all the goals will be met. With advancements in healthcare and technology, this goal is a very real possibility. The IoT could play a key role in gathering the data needed to accomplish this endeavor.

The statistics and data already gathered by the WHO is impressive. My first question is, how accurate is this data? If we are talking about gathering data through internet use and technology, we must address the issue of access to those items. According to the FCC, as recently as 2018 there were 24 million people in the United States alone without reliable access to the internet. (FCC, 2018).In Sub-Saharan Africa, less than forty percent of the population has internet access and only thirty-three percent have a mobile phone. (Harvard International Review, 2020). These two examples are only a small portion of the world’s population, but a good representation of how skewed the data can be.

The second issue with the accuracy of the data is patient non-compliance and under-reporting of information. Take SDG 16.1 for instance, this goal pertains to violence against women worldwide. It is well known that violence against women is not only under-reported in many areas of the world but is socially acceptable behavior. In the western developed countries alone, it is estimated that only fifteen percent of domestic violence victims report the violence. (Gracia, 2004).This is only one example of an under-reported issue.

For the reasons listed above, the first goal of the multi-disciplinary team would need to be aiding in the expansion of reliable internet access to areas of the world where it is not currently available. The second goal would be ad campaigns and educational materials encouraging people to seek help for the many different issues and ailments that the WHO can aid with. With a dedicated team, the WHO, and the IoT, there is an opportunity for many improvements in the overall health and well-being of the world.

The world of informatics represents the backbone of all industries, especially in the health care system. It has been served as a bridge to connect the rest of the world. The Internet of Things (IoT) offers numerous benefits to the health informatics system. As an example, the creation of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) which is the world body of health and biomedical informatics originating in 1967 as a technical committee of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). The main goal of this association id to promote informatics in the health care system, stimulate research, and moves informatics from research to practice (Nelson & Staggers, 2018).

The IoT contains relevant data that people from the world can access and use as a guide to relay information. This information travels via a mobile device or a computer as Friedman (2013) mentioned that “The word informatics is being used casually in association with a broad range of activities and occupations that share only the use of a computer as a common element”. Once an organization detains a device that can share information, the internet can be used to connect data gained from different sources. The creation of the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization (IHTSDO) that has for mission to systematize the nomenclature of the medicine represents an important tool to the IoT because it uses the medical term in the same level in the rest of the world. For instance, the theme of hypertension is related to someone who has high blood pressure, and it describes the same state in any other country.

However, there are multiple issues that are associated with the informatics system because some of the data might be inaccurate. The World Health Organization (WHO) is the liaison that connects the rest of the world by collecting and sharing data, but this information may be falsified due to lack of materials or internet access to divulge this data. This is the reason why Pramanik et al. (2020) state that “Big data and big data analytic methods have been widely used in health care applications. Big data in health care also introduces some complicated issues such as non-uniform data distribution and parallel processing with a large number of variables which are inefficiently handled by existing analytic methods”. Based on this argument, some data are incorrect because of the intensity of the information.

Another issue is access to the internet and a computer that still represents a handicap for certain people. At this present moment, many people do not have a computer or access to the internet; thus, there are many events that are happening around the world that are not reported. Therefore, it is hard to monitor progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For example, the child mortality that included in the Global Health Observatory Data Repository (GHODR), Haiti had 26/1000 neonates deaths at birth in 2018. This information is irrelevant because there are 70 to 80 % of the population who give birth at home, and when a neonate dies, this case is not reported. Only deaths that happen in hospitals are recorded. So, it is hard to measure the progress when the data is incorrect because of the inaccuracy of the data.
