1. As we continue to discuss Lindsay and as she eats her yummy vegetarian meals, what are
the functions of protein in the body?
2. What consequences should Lindsay be aware of when eating too little or too much
protein?
3. What are the processes involved in digesting and absorbing protein that Lindsay should
know about? Be specific with your answer?
4. Lindsay is 25 years old and weighs 125 pounds. Lindsay is active and consumes
approximately 1800 calories per day.
Based on Lindsay’s age and weight, how many grams of protein should she
day?
consume each
Would her recommendation for protein change if she was an athlete? If so, how many grams of
protein would Lindsay need daily?
Another way to calculate protein needs is by using the AMDR for protein. Based on this
recommendation, how many calories from protein should Lindsay consume each day, and how
many grams of protein would this equal?
5. Explain what proteins are and why they are important. Include essential, nonessential and
conditionally essential amino acids in your explanation.
6. What are the dietary recommendations for protein and what are the best sources? Also
define the term nitrogen balance and give examples.

Vegan diet
Lindsay will not be at risk for iron deficiency because of being vegan. Just like animals
have iron, so do plants (Zimmerman, & Snow, 2012). In most protein foods is where iron is found,
which is mostly from animals. However, plants, too, have iron, which means that you do not need
to be inclined to a specific diet for your body to get the number of nutrients it deserves. Whether
you are consuming animal products or plants, a person’s body absorbs what is necessary. Thus, as
long as Lindsay continues to have a balanced diet that she does, she will not lack anything in her
body least of all iron.
There are a couple of micronutrients that will be insufficient in Lindsay’s body. The first
one is heme iron. It is the obvious one. The iron produced by plans is non-heme iron. There is also
Creatine, Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol), and vitamin b12
(Zimmerman, & Snow, 2012). These are all essential nutrients that entirely originate from animalsourced food. They can only be found in foods such as fish, eggs, and dairy products, among
others. Pronouncing herself as a vegetarian would mean that she would have a deficiency of all
these crucial micro-nutrients in her body.
Plant-based diets supply enough proteins, just like animal products. However, for a person
who is into physical activities like Lindsay, her diet will not be enough. The proteins will get used
up quickly, and she will need something to boost her energy and keep her active (Zimmerman, &
Snow, 2012). If she were low on energy, there is a probability that she will be fatigued, will run
out of breath fast, and will not be as active as she should be on a typical day. There are a few
supplements; however, that will be helpful. They include Long Chain omega 3, vitamin D, and
vitamin 12.

Soy products for starters are affluent in proteins. If Lindsay were to take more of that, they
would be no reason for panic. Edamame, tempeh, and tofu are among the foods known to have the
richest source of protein. Another mean is seitan (Zimmerman & Snow, 2012). It is known to be a
vegetarian meal because of its high supply of non-heme iron. If Lindsay takes it every once in
awhile, she will be in good shape. The last meal to be considered is green peas. Just like soy, peas
are also rich in protein. These three meals are also quite delicious, which makes them a catch.
