This week is a two-part assignment with the film journal and
discussion participation. For the essay, I would like you to view
and discuss Un Chien Andalou (1929) by Luis Buñuel/Salvador
Dalí & The Seashell and the Clergyman (1928) by Germaine
Dulac. These are two very different surrealist films: one with a
highly unconventional narrative and one with a more
recognizable storyline. Think about how they embody the spirit
of fantasy, dream-state, the unconscious, chance, and change
through the narrative structure, cinematography and film
effects.
For the film journal please watch one of the four German
Expressionist films and write a 2-page film analysis. An analysis
requires you to not only describe but contextualize and
reinterpret the film. In what ways do the films embody certain
aspects of expressionistic works? You can include some of the
visual artworks that were mentioned. How are they using line,
form, shape, light, narrative, costuming, acting, backdrops, text
to tell the story. What about the storyline itself is
expressionistic? What about the motifs or how do the motifs
reflect the cultural atmosphere of pre and post-war Germany?
Second Part: the discussion:
DiscussUn Chien Andalou (1929) by Luis Buñuel/Salvador Dalí & The Seashell and the
Clergyman (1928) by Germaine Dulac. As the first surrealist films, consider how the
editing, chronology, cinematography, lighting and special effects contribute to the
narrative. I would like to leave the direction of the discussion develop organically
through your responses, but some questions you might try to work out are: what is
the narrative(s)? How do the technical or cerebral aspects of the film take us into the
surreal landscapes of each work? Are there technical innovations you can compare to
the earlier films you’ve seen? What makes these work surreal? These are two very
different surrealist films: one with a highly unconventional narrative and one with a
