SERGEANT ROLES AND RESPONSIBILIES
Sergeant Nelson 2nd shift security leader is responsible for providing daily supervision and mentoring all
assigned security officers. Sergeant Nelson should perform daily shift briefings and ensure that all
members of the security team are providing excellent service. Sergeant Nelson will respond to all safety,
medical, and security calls for service on the hospital campus. Sergeant Nelson is responsible for
professionally handling all calls for service and documenting all incidents. Sergeant Nelson is responsible
for managing assigned tasks from the Chief of security.
SECURITY DEPARTMENT 30-60 DAYS ASSESSMENT
After completing my first 30 days assessment of the Security Department, I am deeply concerned with my
observation and feedback of Sergeant Nelson. He shows little regard for working within the scope of his
job and often provides no guidance for the security officers trying to complete their daily activities
assigned to them. In fact, Sergeant Nelson often times will stay in the security office with the lights out
watching entertainment on an iPod without providing any sort of oversight for the activities taking place
on the hospital campus. For example, during one of my evening tours before leaving for the day, officers
were seen off their assigned security post, observed in places they should not have been, and no
documented patrols completed.
Additionally, several officers working on the 1st and 2nd shift have express their concerns regarding
Sergeant Nelson’s presence and leadership being needed during the shift, but he spends his time in the
office eating and watching his iPod. Furthermore, on March 12, 2020 at approximately 3:30pm, I
conducted a security team meeting with the second shift leadership and security, and the below key topics
were discussed.
1. Daily Activity Reports
2. Parking Enforcement- All vehicles of the staff of security needs to be
registered and parked in assigned sticker areas.
3. Incident Reporting
4. Time & Attendance
5. Shift Change- Shift Briefing
6. Reports/ Investigation
7. Badging Access Physical Security- VC-Desk
8. Security Operations- Performance
9. Abanding Post
SECURITY STAFF PARKING
There are major security leadership challenges ranging from managing his shift, training and
development of officers, and also communication with the team. I have spoken with Sergeant Nelson on
several occasions about the following issues:
On March 12, after the team meeting ended, Sergeant Nelson vehicle was seen parked in the (Reserved
for Rehab Patient Parking only) Chief Porter contacted Sergeant Nelson requesting him to move his
vehicle. Sergeant Nelson continues parking his vehicle in the Reserved for Rehab Patient Parking only.
Sergeant Nelson continues to park his vehicle in the traffic circle/ fire lane of the main entrance.
