This assignment is designed to engage you with the issue of effectiveness of art. You are to
select two works we have covered in class for your analysis and discussion. One work should
serve as an example of effective/successful art, and another as ineffective/unsuccessful. Before
presenting a detailed analysis of these works, you should come up with your own criteria (at
least 3) for what makes an effective/successful art. For example, to be effective should it be
aesthetically pleasing (what exactly makes art aesthetically pleasing: scale, location, colors,
particular style? I would like you to come up with your own 3 criteria. Each criterion should be
explained. For example, you can state that in order to be effective, art should reflect the values of
its intended audience. But you have to explain why it is important. Consider your criteria as an
argument you are advancing/defending in your essay. This essay should be based on your close
visual observations rather than outside research.
