Hi everyone! My name is Rakan Alwadei, you can call me “RK” it is a lot easier than Rakan. My preferred pronouns are he/him. I am a senior in chemical engineering program at ASU. I am from Saudi Arabia and live in the eastern region of KSA (another name of Saudi Arabia) in a city called Dammam, where is the weather is the same as Phoenix with higher humidity. In my free time, I like to spend it by playing video games or volunteering on any occasions. Also, I like to travel a lot in my long vacations. I have been to UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Malaysia, Indonesia, and a lot of other countries. My goal for the next vacation is to go in a road trip with friends to discover the west coast of US.

First, my friend recommended this course for me since all the courses for the summer 2020 went online. Also, my sponsorship has a rule that I need to have 6 credit in the summer term. I was looking for SWU course and I came across this subject. I have finished all my electives and I was looking for interest subjects like social work. Another thing that I want is to do is to compare between the idea of social work in Saudi Arabia and the idea of social work in US

The first thing that came to my mind when I hear social work is to volunteer in any type of work that will benefit the community or part of it. For the social worker, he/she is the person that take responsibility to check if the work was done as it supposes to be and give their evaluation about the work done. From my experience, most social works that I dealt with were checking on poor families who do not have an income and try help them financially and emotionally or in any kind such as giving them jobs, or supply them with groceries etc…

A social worker has the requirement skills such as communication, understanding the patient needs, and emotional intelligence; to deal with variant people with different histories and background and help them surpass their obstacles by the available resources

The most interesting thing is how did the social work started, their ways in solving different problems. I want to see their perspective in dealing with obstacles that the others have. Having different viewpoints help me to deal with my problems in the future.
