UMKC Hybridity BY Khalid Alhathlool Article Annotated Bibliography Annotation is an essential skill in effectively reading and interacting with text, and while many people are familiar with coming into college, most students either disregard its importance and have let go of the practice all together or have adopted inefficient techniques (like a reliance on highlighting). Annotation is a good practice for any reading, but becomes especially important when reading for research. You’ll find texts that you’ve annotated more useful as you begin writing your first essay and need to return to past readings for evidence, but it becomes especially important as we reach the end of this class when you are having to read large volumes of academic sources in a short amount of time (with no peer discussion to rely on) and needing to pull on them for specific information to support an argument. The more thoroughly you annotate the easier it becomes to not only comprehend a text, but to use it for your own arguments. So, while a basic skill, it is an important one to review at this stage in our course.

The three resources below provide a good overview on the importance of critical reading and textual annotation, as well as different ways to approach it for both primary text (novels, poems, etc) and secondary source material (scholarly articles). Read all in full, and consider what strategies you think would best help your comprehension, and be most useful to adopt.

After reading the articles, your assignment for this week is to apply them to our reading by Amin Maalouf, In the Name of Identity, either as you read it for the first time (ideally) or as you reread through it (if you’ve already completed the reading). You do not need to use all of the strategies suggested in the articles, but should have a well-reasoned approach to your annotation that adopts a few. After reading and annotating Maalouf, write a short response (about 300 words) in two parts, first summarizing briefly the important points of Maalouf, then explaining your approach to annotating this article. It might be helpful to answer these questions: What is Maalouf’s main argument in this article (in one or two sentences)? What evidence from the text made that clear/how did he support this idea? How did you go about annotating it and why? What did you find useful about these new strategies? How did they change your reading process? How will you adopt these techniques into your reading moving forward?
