University of Florida A Contemporary Conflict Resolution Approach to the Bosnian War PPT Notice the chapters in Ramsbotham et. al., Part I (chs 5-10) and Part II are about ways of responding to conflict and /or violence. The chapters discuss approaches that are contemporary (part I) and what Ramsbotham et. al., consider Cosmopolitan conflict resolution approaches to addressing conflict/violence.

If you selected a chapter from Part I (chs 5- 10) on a contemporary conflict resolution approach, then read your selected chapter closely to learn about the type of intervention described and what kind of conflictive situation this intervention seeks to address. After you have done this, note down how the intervention or interventions described in your selected chapter could be used to address the Bosnian war case we used in class. Your presentation will apply what you have read to the Bosnian case.

If you selected a chapter from Part II (chapters 11- 18) on cosmopolitan conflict resolution approaches, then read your selected chapter closely for what it suggests as the role the specific field/approach plays in conflict resolution. After you have done this, consider how that specific approach (e.g. gender, arts/culture, etc.) could be useful for addressing the Bosnian War and at what level. Would it have worked or not?

So, beyond merely reviewing the book chapter I am inviting you to apply (use) what you learn to recommend one or two ways of addressing a real life conflict. I hope this is useful.

Presentation Guidelines Bosnian war

1.Time. Prepare an oral presentation of not more than 15 minutes. (At least 12 slides PowerPoints with summaries on the adding notes)

2.Case. Each presentation will focus on the video of Bosnian war.

3.Tasks. The presentation must apply (use) what you have learned from the assigned readings on conflict resolution strategies or approaches, e.g., concepts, theories, or models to generate a ‘new’ knowledge of what aspect of the conflict would be addressed directly, how and the likely social effect.

In other words, the presentation should produce ‘new’ knowledge of how one can address the Bosnian war from the perspective of the selected conflict resolution strategy (e.g. negotiation, peacebuilding, reconciliation, etc.).

Show how what you have learned from the readings the theory, concept, model, or conflict resolution approach expands and/or deepens our understanding of the challenges involved in dealing with such a conflict.

Some ideas for process:

a) Provide a brief and concise introduction of the

real-life event – the relevant features the audience needs to know about the case that are relevant to your presentation theme.

the conflict resolution approach you will use to produce ‘new’ knowledge and an understanding or explanation of the real-life event.

Show, clearly –

b) how the selected conflict resolution approach from the Chapters I send to you expands our understanding of the case.

How the real-life conflict resolution event described in the video documentary illustrates a specific conflict resolution practice learned from the assigned readings.
