VCU Music Effect in Mental Health Discussion For the assessment portion, there are 15 criteria or “aspects” to assess for your assigned project. **For each criteria/aspect, you are required to assign points using a pull-down menu and type something in each of the comment boxes. Please be sure to assign points to each aspect/criterion AND write a comment. The comment should help the student improve that part. If the part is missing, then just write “missing” as a comment. Don’t forget a final feedback comment. Encouraging words would be nice. Music’s effects on mental
health.
❖
❖
❖
Music is one of humanity’s most primitive art forms and one of the earliest ways for a person
to express themselves
Music is very relatable because humans often have similar experiences, which cause them
to have similar feelings
Mental health issues are often solved by relating to another person
Pat
Peer reviewed article #2 “Making Music for Mental
Health”.
This article shows an experiment in the UK where therapy sessions involved group
drumming and attempted to determine a correlation between the drumming and
reduced symptoms of mental health related issues. The study found that the
drumming had liberating effects on the release of energy from the patients and
connection through non verbal communication. It helped the patients with new
social interaction and feelings of belonging, also it gave the group a safe place
free of mistakes to explore their creativity. It demonstrated that group drumming
was a creative space where recovery can begin to happen through
experimentation and freedom.
Hypothesis:
If someone struggling with mental health issues uses music as an outlet or finds
music that relates to their struggle, then it will help alleviate their symptoms
because when people relate to another they feel less alone.
❖
❖
In this project I will attempt to find a correlation between music and the
reduction of symptoms related to an individual’s mental health.
This hypothesis was formed by nticing the increase in music therapy as an
option in rehabs and psych hospitals and exploring its potential
Variables
Ethics
❖
❖
❖
❖
❖
❖
The independent variable will be songs listened to andthe ways each of them
affect the patients emotions
The dependant variable is the patient’s mental issue
The confounding variable will be the patients preference in music genre or if
they don’t like the song, this can be removed by sticking to a specific genre or
focusing more on the lyrics
The constant is using the same patient, but using different music
The ethics of the experiment can arise issue because we are dealing with a
person’s personal problems and if a song affects them too much it can be
overwhelming to deal with someone’s very private emotions, we do not know
what caused the mental illness
Procedure
Ect
❖
❖
❖
❖
❖
❖
Have the patient explain their issue
Have a playlist of songs that may relate to their issue
Have the patient listen to each song then journal how it made them feel or
what it has helped them realize
Have a patient possibly change the lyrics to have them relate more or wite
what they think the artist was experiencing
Have the patient talk to the others in the study to see what they have felt
❖
People can be biased toward their emotions, reject their emotions, or reject
that the music has made them realize something they can not handle. These
are some of the ways bias can affect the study
Self-replication can occur if two patients with the same mental issue benefit in
the same ways from a given song.
Importance
Why I chose this topic.
❖
I chose this as my hypothesis because in my experience music has elevated
symptoms of depression many times in my life. I find music to be an art form that
is very relatable, and when I hear someone expressing some of the same feelings
that I have I find comfort in knowing I’m not alone.
❖
If music can be a viable option to solve mental health issues, the field of
psychology will be greatly benefitted
Mental health issues seem to be rising as the years progress and almsost
everyone needs to develop personal coping skills
