415 – 3 Quick Psychology Questions

1. Consider Kosslyn’s argument in favor of spatial representation and Pylyshyn’s argument in favor of propositional representation. If you need more information to understand the difference, take a look at this tutorial. Now that you can recognize what each theory suggests and the differences between the theories, choose whether you think that we use spatial representation or propositional representations when we form mental images. Defend your position by giving real-life examples (not the ones provided in the text) that support that position.

2. Chomsky and Skinner made two very different claims about language acquisition in humans. While Chomsky said it was a matter or nature, Skinner, said it was a matter of nurture (i.e., learning). What do you believe? Do you believe that language acquisition is a matter of nature, nurture, or some combination of both? Give examples from your own experiences to support and defend your position.

3. Chapter 10 discusses how using stereotypes can be an efficient way to interact socially. Well, we have all heard stereotypes related to our own race/ethnicity. Describe a time when you were stereotyped. How did it make you feel? How did you handle the situation? Did you say something or ignore it? How do you think this stereotype is perpetuated (e.g., movies, commercials, books, etc.)?
