Build Your Own Electromagnet Project
Lab
Directions: In this lab, you will construct your own electromagnet and test how
strong that magnet is.
Materials
?
a standard battery
?
insulated copper wire
?
large iron nail
?
staples or paperclips
Instructions
1. The copper wire will act as solenoid, and the nail will act as the ferrous core.
Wrap the wire around the nail as many times as you feel you need to. Be
careful not the overlap the wire. Record the number of coils you wrapped
around the nail.
2. Once the solenoid is wrapped around the core, connect the ends of the wire
to the ends of the battery. This will send an electric current through the wire
and immediately magnetize the nail. The nail will now act as an
electromagnet.

3. Bring the staples or paperclips close to the electromagnet. Record the
distance of how far away the staples or paperclips have to be in order to
start being attracted to the electromagnet. If the distance is too small to
record, simply record that as contact distance.
4. Repeat the experiment two more times with different amounts of coils
around the electromagnet.
5. Be aware of heat buildup. Using too many batteries, batteries that are too
high voltage, or using too many coils can result in high heat buildup. Please
be cautious when doing this lab.
Data Analysis
Create a data table of the number of coils and the distance at which the magnetic
field affected the test objects.

Answer the following questions:
1. Did the number of coils have an effect on the overall strength of the
electromagnet you created?
2. What are some other ways you think you could increase/decrease the
strength of an electromagnet?
