I am on a journey toward self-discovery and self-actualization, and I believe that these personal
goals can be achieved with the help of the UW Foster MSBA program. Moreover, I want to be in
a position to give back to the society by helping them solve issues that have been affecting them
the most. There are many ways in which I can achieve this but being in a good profession
provides more ways of reaching as many people as possible.
I have both short-term and long-term professional goals. Immediately after graduating with a
UW Foster MSBA program, I want to become an entry-level business analyst in any reputable
consultancy firm. I will flexible to the place of work and level of salary because my focus will be
on gaining experience and seizing all learning opportunities that will later enable me to climb the
professional ladder faster. I know that the program will help boost my fundamental data analytics
skills and grant me an opportunity to interact with many other professionals in the field, and this
will enhance my scope of understanding.
My long-term professional goal is to join the Strategy Planning Department of such
multinational conglomerates as Tencent and Alibaba. My wish is to develop advanced
technology innovations to help change peoples lives and enhance the standards of living in our
society. The specific areas that I would prefer include big data, quantum physics, and the 5G or
6G eras in the future. While these are long-term goals, I am planning to start working hard
immediately after finishing the program so that I may be better placed to achieve them than my
competitors. I understand that the world of professional growth is all about competition, and only
the fittest, the smartest, and the most hardworking make it to the top. It is never going to be an
easy academic journey, but with these clearly defined goals, I am convinced that nothing stands
between me and excellence.
The UW Foster MSBA program will help me understand all fundamental concepts that will be
pivotal to my growth, both in the personal and professional goals. It will help me to tell stories
with data and to develop workable strategies as an entry-level business strategist. After
successfully completing the program, I am convinced that I will be now in a position to
understand how to operate effectively in a big data environment and how to rely on various
analytics methods and models to understand sophisticated patterns of data and text. The program
will also allow me to prepare for highly challenging but fulfilling opportunities in the domains of
business intelligence and big data analytics, and I want to be part of the schools growing pool of
professionals. Without a doubt, the UW Foster MSBA program is the most important step toward
the achievement of my personal and professional goals.
How does your background prepare you to succeed in business analytics? (500 words max)
I have a strong background in data analytics and business intelligence. I undertook my
undergraduate studies in UC San Diego, whereby I specialized in Probability and Statistics.
Here, I took various courses which I believe are well aligned with data and analytics. I took
various programming languages such as C++, Java, Python, R, and SageMath. The analysis of
data requires a combination of statistics and programming, and all these models and concepts
have hardened me to be a proficient data analyst. I also have a strong background in regression,
which I believe is the backbone of statistics and is also very crucial when we are seeking to
understand patterns in data. I can confidently analyze any data or text from databases using
several statistical and mathematical tools and models such as Word2vec, TF-IDF, PCA,
Stemming and Lemmatization, Tree Model, F-statistic, Greedy Algorithm, Gradient Descent,
Ridge regression, and Lasso regression. I want to broaden my scope of understanding in
regression, and I am convinced that the UW Foster MSBA program is the perfect match for me
and my skillset. I also have a strong background in data cleaning and management, big data,
financial and managerial accounting, mathematical theory, machine learning, and software.
One experience that I believe played an integral role in shaping my experience in business
analytics was during one of my graduate-level big data classs final projects. The class has
around five projects, all of which were very hard and highly demanding. However, this one stood
out in many ways. This was a data science competition in which thousands of projects were
competing against one another on Kaggle, a website dedicated to competitions dealing with data
science. The competition was organized under Japans largest community-powered marketplace,
Mercari. Since this project required the application of sophisticated regression and programming
methods, I was forced to learn them. Additionally, I became proficient in TI-IDF and PCA,
which are great methods for keyword identification and content analysis. Xgboosting is also
another model that was useful in the project, and I acquired some concepts and skills on how to
use it. It is used for establishing patterns and making predictions based on current data. During
the analysis of around 1.4 million data for the project, I also learned programming languages like
Python and R. In addition to the technical concepts learned from this project, I also learned that
persistence and hard-work are important values for anyone wishing to achieve any tangible
success in any field. Therefore, such values will be transferred into the UW Foster MSBA
program and will enable me to put all the effort needed to achieve excellence in the field.
Overall, I am hopeful that I will get the opportunity to join the university and pursue this
program to position myself competitively in the job market.
Do you have experience in the following areas? If so, please describe your experience, related
coursework, & knowledge in these areas (1-2 sentences):
1. Math, Probability and Statistics
In my undergraduate degree, I specialized in Probability and Statistics, so I have skills in a
broad range of areas including mathematical statistics, time series, probability and stochastic
processes. I have undertaken big projects and case studies where I used a wide array of
statistical tools and learned such concepts and methods like F-statistic, Stemming and
Lemmatization, Tree Model, Greedy Algorithm, Gradient Descent, Ridge regression, and
Lasso regression.
2. Information Technology/Systems
I have some experience in IT and systems and have learned JAVA, C++ and a vast range of

I have in-depth expertise in programming languages like Python and R, and Ive applied them
in a couple of projects that we have handled in our classes. For example, I used these two
languages in a project in which we were supposed to code some analyses and predictions for
around 1.4 million data.
4. MS Excel
I am not so much conversant with the sophisticated functions and techniques of MS Excel.
However, I have some basic understanding of the program and I have used it in various
occasions.
5. Data and Database Management
During a certain big data competition on Kaggle.com, I was responsible for data management,
which included cleaning irrelevant and unnecessary data and delete anything that was not
needed. I am also good in data analysis, and R programming is one of the most important tools
that I have used to undertake this function.
1. Please expand on why you are pursuing this program (250 words or less):
I want to pursue this program to enhance my analytical skills and apply them in a broad array of
fields, especially in business. A critical analyst makes decisions based on rationality and
maturity, and I want these two values to be my strongholds when I finally become a professional
business analyst. My habit of trying to analyze things, events, and news critically has been
developed for a while now. I have a tendency of reading journal articles and interpreting them
from a critical angle, pinpointing the specific aspects that could make the news true or untrue.
For example, whenever I see something being advertised but looks like propaganda, I always
ensure that I sift through it to determine its authenticity. Firstly, I seek to know the owner, the
message, and the target group. Secondly, I dig deeper to know if there are some hidden details
about the advert that the publisher does not want me to hear or see. Further, I do some research
to identify the competitors and their advertising strategies and compare them with the one being
used by the specific one that I am examining. I can also become aware of any fallacies that he
may have used and any other forms of rhetoric at play. Obvious, analytics is not founded on
conjecture, it demands empirical support and evidence, and therefore I believe that the applied
analytics program will help me to enhance my analytical skills and broaden my scope of skillsets
in the field of business analytics.
2. The statement of academic purpose should discuss (in no more than 500 words):
With my short-term goal immediately after graduation being to become a business analyst, I
believe that the Applied Analytics program will be my stepping stone toward achieving the basic
skills needed to flourish in this technically demanding field. I am specifically interested in this
program because the courses offered fit perfectly into my expectations, especially regarding the
areas of competency that I want to excel in. In modern times, many organizations have complex
data collection and processing technologies, and they believe that they can use these tools to
enhance their business intelligence by carrying out advanced data analytics. However, most of
these organizations do not yet have the required personnel to undertake these analytics because
the profession is relatively underexplored. I, therefore, want to capitalize on this gap and become
a marketable expert in data science, frameworks, and visualization. I know that this is a field that
has enormous potential for growth in my profession and I am planning to continue with studies
even after graduation from Columbia University.
I will bring a vast range of skills and attributes to the program, including proficiency in data
cleaning and management; experience in big data, statistics, financial and managerial
accounting; expertise in programming, mathematical theory, machine learning, and software; and
fluency in Chinese and English.
In the past, I have applied some of these concepts in
many projects and competitions, and I have performed excellently in most of them. For example,
I used these statistical approaches in a big data project competition on kaggle.com, and our team
emerged as one of the top performers out of over two thousand participants.
I believe that this program will help me achieve my goal of becoming a highly marketable
business analyst. Considering the basic requirements needed for the job, the Applied Analytics
program at Columbia University provides all fundamental courses and skillsets. I will use the
opportunity provided to learn hard coding skills and to enhance my ability to make business and
financial decisions based on the concepts acquired in the program. The program is businessoriented and aims at helping learners to acquire essential knowledge in matters of business
intelligence and data analytics. Therefore, it will prepare me for the challenging tasks that I will
be dealing with as a business analyst and harden me to become a reckonable force in this highly
challenging yet rewarding field.
3.In no more than 250 words, describe a challenge related to data or analytics that you have
encountered. How did you work to resolve this challenge, and did you succeed?
Among all the challenges that I have faced in data analytics, one stands out: my graduate-level
big data classs final project. It was a data science competition bringing together thousands of
projects. The competition was organized under Japans largest community-powered marketplace,
Mercari, and conducted on kaggle.com, a website dedicated to competitions dealing with data
science. I must admit that this was a very demanding project, concerning expertise, resources,
time, and coordination. We had to learn various mathematical and statistical models to make the
project a success, and some of them had not yet been covered well in class. Moreover, the project
was huge and would end up with a length of 27 pages. To resolve these challenges, we were
forced to dedicate at least 6 hours daily for over six weeks. It was tedious and tiresome, but we
kept on motivating ourselves and remaining committed toward achieving our target. In the end,
we managed to scoop great results and were ranked highly among more than two thousand
projects that were reviewed. In addition to these fulfilling results, I was able to learn many
theories and models that I had never used before. I became proficient in such regression models
as TF-IDF, PCA, and xgboosting. I also learned how to code them in R and Python as we were
supposed to analyze over 1.4 million data before compiling the final report. On the whole, it was
a highly rewarding challenge.
4. What attracted you most to this program (250 words)?
I was mainly attracted by the fact that this program emphasizes mostly the importance of data
and analytics in business intelligence, and most of its courses are inclined toward the same. I
would not just wish to enroll in any university offering similar courses because I am specifically
looking for a program that will refine my understanding of data and how to analyze it to come up
with useful conclusions that can enhance the effectiveness of decision-making in both financial
and managerial contexts in the realm of business. I specifically want to take advantage of these
courses: “Applied Analytics Frameworks and Methods,” “Strategy and Analytics, Managing
Data and many others whose focus is data. For example, I know that the Managing Data
course fits perfectly into my areas of preference because it will help me understand the
sophisticated ways in which data can be managed and used to make necessary inferences in a
wide array of contexts. The level of specificity in this program is what makes me believe that this
is the best program for me. There are very few general courses, and every course offered here is
tied to the overall objective of developing professional data analysts who can apply their in-depth
knowledge in any field and help organizations understand their data in a better and more
beneficial way. Undeniably, Applied Analytics at Columbia University is made for people who
share my dreams and goals as far as data analytics is concerned.

Helping fellow Chinese Maintain their Eating Culture
I regard eating to be one of the most important rituals in life, and I therefore I helped organize a
group of Chinese to patrol around Asian restaurants and other establishments in the Bay Area
compiling a dining guide meant for fellow food lovers. While some Chinese do not have any
issue eating Western foods like tacos, pasta, and burgers, our team believes that traditional foods
are more fulfilling and are pivotal toward maintaining our culture. The twelve-thousand-word
dining guide has detailed information about the menus and pricing of 112 Asian restaurants and
supermarkets in the region that we believe our fellow Chinese food lovers would enjoy visiting.
Saving Money when Buying Cars
Since most overseas students do not know they can bargain and get fair prices, they are ripped
off by dealers and that is why I created a group to combine efforts and build our bargaining
power so that it could become easier for international students to purchase priced cars. I asked
members of the group to come with me as we visited different car dealers in Bay Area and
negotiated with them to get the lowest prices possible. We were able to settle the outdoor price
lower than MSRP, and this implied that international students…
