Course Project Overview – CJ Career Pathways
What Can You Do With a Criminal Justice Education?
There are many television shows and blockbuster movies that spark interest in the
criminal justice field – Criminal Minds, CSI, Law and Order, How to Get Away with
Murder, 21 Jump Street, Let’s Be Cops, Training Day, Lethal Weapon and Super
Troopers (to name a few). Most of these portrayals however inaccurately show what
working in the criminal justice is really like. The reality of criminal justice can be quite
different than what media portrays.
When making a decision about your education, and subsequent career, it is very
important to get all of the information you can. This project will allow you to research
and present information about various criminal justice career pathways so that you can
determine if there is a path in criminal justice that matches your interests and abilities.
The Project:
In this project, you will choose two different criminal justice career pathways, locate
various jobs that fit within those pathways, and create a presentation of your
findings.
Students will examine a variety of careers in the Criminal Justice field (including Law
Enforcement, Corrections, Court System, and Juvenile Justice) and investigate that career
pathway in-depth. Students will then take these careers – parole/probation officer, jailer,
warden, court reporter, judge, attorney, clerk, police officer, detention center or after-care
professional for juveniles, etc. – and create a visual presentation that contains an accurate
overview of the positions (responsibilities, day-to-day activities, education needed,
minimal requirements, preferred qualities, etc.).
The presentations will expose students to relevant information about career pathways in
the criminal justice field as they think about choosing a possible career in criminal
justice. In addition, this experience benefits criminal justice students, as they will help
reinforce key goal areas of the course, which include giving students a broad introduction
to the field/criminal justice system and the career pathways within the field, as they’ll
have to research career pathways in-depth and become familiar with a variety of careers.

Requirements:
1. Choose TWO different career pathways from the below list:
a. Law Enforcement
b. Courts
c. Corrections
d. Juvenile Justice
2. Locate current (within the last 6 months) job postings that fit into the career
pathways that you have chosen. These positions do not need to be in Minnesota.
You must locate 3 job postings for each career pathways (6 jobs total). The
job postings must be for 3 different types of jobs with differing duties.
• Example 1: If you choose the Law Enforcement career pathway, you
cannot use 3 different postings for local/city police officer (even if from
different states) since the job is the same, only the location is different. You
would need to locate 3 different jobs that fit within Law Enforcement. This
could include police chief, federal agent, and city police officer.
• Example 2: If you choose the Corrections career pathway, you cannot use 3
different postings for correctional officer (even if from different states).
You would need to locate 3 different jobs that fit within Corrections. This
could include correctional officer, probation officer, and case worker.
3. Take note of (1) the agency/organization name where the job is located (2) job
qualifications and requirements (must include education requirements), (3) other
hiring information provided in the postings (ex: salary, preferred qualifications,
etc.) and (4) duties associated with those careers. At least three different duties for
each career – you might need to research info about the position, beyond the
posting.
4. Create a visual presentation to showcase your findings.
a. Virtual Options:
i. PowerPoint Presentation
ii. Video (must be accessible by instructor)
b. In-Person Options:
i. Poster (must be turned in to course instructor on campus,
arrangements for submission must be made)
