Which disorders have a high prevalence of co-morbidity? What treatments would be appropriate when there is comorbidity between personality and substance use disorders?
I would say that Borderline Personality Disorder have a high prevalence of co-morbidity and according to the NBCI,
there is a common, clear linkage between substance use disorders and Borderline Personality Disorder. The NCBI,
“states that comorbidity range of the two disorders are 14 to 17 percent.” There are many common ways that a
therapist could treat and individual when there is a co-morbidity between personality and substacne use disorders.
The therapist could utilized a integrated apporach utilizing some sort of medication regime to help aid with the
symptoms that comes along with the diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disoder and utilize some sort of 12-Step
program to target the substance use along with some Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and
maybe some Solution-Focused Therapy to aid in the growth and the change that the client would have to endure
inorder to achieve optimal succcess on the substance spectrum and be able to have some sort of control and piece
on the personality disorder spectrum as well.

Hello professor and class,
Comorbidity describes two or more disorders or illnesses occurring in the same person (drugabuse.gov). With
comorbidity the illnesses or disorders that occur may either occur at the same time or one after the other. These
illnesses involve substance abuse and mental health related issues/disorders, to include depression, anxiety, and
schizophrenia to name a few. Appropriate treatments when treating co-morbid disorders can range from
psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and medication assisted therapy. Psychosocial treatments with dually
diagnosed patients often involve the modification of standard techniques common in conventional primary
substance abuse treatment settings or psychiatric treatment settings (pubs.niaaa.nih.gov). Psychological
treatment can be also used in combination with medication administration, being that some disorders require a
medication regimen, which requires proper compliance for effectiveness. When mental illness and substance use
disorders are comorbid, both disorders should be considered primary, and treatment of both should be integrated
and simultaneous (psychiatrictimes.com).
