Alice Munro and her Father Colonel Munro: Alike, Yet Different
In the novel, The Last of the Mohicans by James Fennimore Cooper, Alice and Col.
Munro are two completely different characters despite the fact that they are family. On one hand,
Munro is a major character in the novel and plays a huge role in the French and Indian war. On
the other hand, Alice is a minor character who is portrayed as a damsel in distress. Throughout
the novel, Cooper allows the audience to better understand these characters by putting them in
certain scenarios which depicts their appearance, personality and how they are portrayed by
different characters.
Colonel Munro (Mann)
Colonel Munro was born in Scotland. He had two wives since his first wife died of
sickness. He is the father of two daughters named Alice and Cora. He was a strong commander
of the British troops and was in the military for a long period of time. Though Munro is the
English commander of Fort William Henry, he cares deeply about his daughters in which at one
point of the novel, he stops his troops from firing and says “Hold! Tis she! God has restored me
to my children! Throw open the sally-port; to the field… pull not a trigger, lest ye kill my
lambs!” (Cooper) This part of the novel displays the kind of person Munro was. Munro was also
intelligent, straightforward and stubborn. Many characters disliked Munro due to his personality
and how he acted such as Hawkeye but there were others who were loyal to him such as Duncan
Heyward and his daughter Alice.
2
Alice (Mann)
Alice Munro was pure Scottish. Her mother and father were both from Scotland unlike
her sister Cora. Alice had fair golden hair, bright blue eyes and was a very delicate character. She
was also really shy and was seen as Cora’s little sister by many. She was infatuated with Duncan
Heyward to a point where she would try to act tough in front of him. For example, in this scene,
“Now let me make an effort to walk, she said when they had entered the forest, blushing, though
unseen, that she had not been sooner able to quit the arms of Duncan.” (Cooper) Alice adores
Duncan, which is why she acts a little different towards him. Although both characters have
many differences, they also possess some similarities.
Munro and Alice were both Scottish. They were also both high class. They also both took
a liking towards Duncan Heyward but in different ways. Munro appreciated Heyward because he
was a loyal soldier to him and Alice was in love with Heyward because of the person he was.
Lastly, Munro and Alice both also disliked the Hurons as they tried to attack them many times.
Throughout the novel, the audience developed a sense of what type of characters Munro
and Alice would be. Cooper portrayed Alice as a simple heroine while making Munro a
respected military leader. Many characters have different feelings towards Alice and Munro
based on how they treated them. Some characters adored them and some simply loathed them.

Even though the characters seem like complete opposites, there were parts of the novel which
displayed their similarities.
