Research topic and outline due 3/9/19
First pick your TOPIC: your topic must be a learning objective from any chapter in our book.
Next prepare a brief OUTLINE: a bullet list of 4 items you will cover under your main topic.
Then list your preliminary REFERENCES: list 4 sources you will use to research your topic. At
least one of your sources must be a primary source, such as a tax code section, treasury
regulation, or court case. Other sources can include secondary sources, such as books, IRS
publications, periodicals, and web sites.

Basis for cost recovery
Personal property depreciation:
The depreciation is being provided on the personal property in accordance with the period of
ownership and the depreciation is being claimed even if there is a debt being attached on the
property.
Applying the mid quarter convention and the real property
The mid quarter convention is a new concept by the internal revenue service and it is being
provided in relation to the time when the property is being put into service. This concept is being
put into the application when more than approximately 40% of the total value of the property is
being used in the past 3 months of the related tax period.
Special rules relating to cost recovery
This rule provide for the special depreciation allowance in which 100% deduction is being given
in regard to the qualified property that is being acquired after 27 September, 2017.
Amortization
This concept provides the depreciation of the intangible assets as thus the cost of the asset is being
spread over the estimated life of the intangible asset. The value is accordingly determined in
connection with the life of the other related assets. The objective of providing amortization is being
done in order to spread the cost of the asset amongst the total life of the asset.
