DT006/2 Product Design and CAD Assignment 2 2018-19: Design for assembly
Background to the assignment
Your assignment is to design a toy for children between the ages of three and five. It is expected that
the toy will be suitable for mass production and will consist of a number of parts which are joined
together to form the final assembly. The toy must have a mechanism which converts rotary motion to
linear motion (or vice-versa). You are encouraged to make this element a special distinguishing feature
of the overall toy design.
You should first plan out exactly what you are going to do, identifying the specific steps that will help
you to complete the task. I expect that you will create a list of product requirements and then proceed
to design each of the components, clearly specifying how each component is manufactured, what
materials it is made from, the manufacturing process to be used, any finishing processes, etc. You
should use your knowledge of component design gained through assignment 1 to optimise your design
for manufacture. For example for plastic parts you might highlight any areas where there will be
undercuts in the mould, where ejector pins and gate(s) are/are not allowed, a suitable location for the
mould split line, etc. You are expected to submit a schematic/concept of a tool design.
You must also specify how the components will be assembled to form the final product. All interfacing
dimensions must have clearly specified tolerances with a tolerance analysis performed where relevant.
It is expected that the design documentation will take several forms such as sketches, notes,
calculations and lists. You must also include an instruction/safety manual. Hand-drawing is quite
acceptable and encouraged to ensure that you can work on the project each week in class. However
you must use CAD software for your final, preferred design and create a fully detailed 2D drawing for
at least 1 part and a separate drawing for the full assembly.
Timeline: During the first session you are advised to create a list of tasks/steps you will follow
together with an associated time-frame. The timeframe should include a deliverable, or element, which
is to be completed by the end of class each week. You are expected to demonstrate significant ongoing
progress during each week’s class.
