Effects of Gentrification Multimodal Argument Project Website –A combination of at least three (3) types of media. This can include other forms of multimodal texts (audio, video, written texts, etc.), social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) or it can resemble the type of news streams found on popular news sites, such as CNN, MSNBC, Fox, etc. w/valid sources. You may use Weebly, WordPress, Wix, or other free sites to assist you with building the website. The expectation is that the website will act as an accurate representation of your argument/topic. It should be thorough, incorporate other forms of media, and resemble a valid source. Outline & Annotated Bibliography:In addition to the multimodal argument, you will submit an outline and annotated bibliography for the final project. The outline for this assignment will be more of a checklist on how you plan to approach the final project, as well as the mode you have chosen and why (Why is this particular mode the best choice for your argument, especially considering the audience?). The outline does not need to be super formal; instead, it should act as a road map for the final project. Final Project – Multimodal Argument
Final Project:
One of the major goals of this course is to learn how to compose an effective argument. In the last
few weeks, you have analyzed an argument, written your own argument, and now you will expand
on these skills to create a multimodal argument.
For the final project, you are allowed to use the same topic or choose a different topic. However, as
a reminder, if you choose a new topic, it must connect to our course theme: Race, Class, and Gender
in the United States. If you choose to discuss the same topic, you will need to continue your
research on the topic and present new ideas in your multimodal argument. The goal for this
assignment is not to simply regurgitate the same points you argued in the second paper, but to
present new points that will help you expand on your argument. The mode you choose should best
serve your topic, argument, and audience. Consider this carefully, as it could make or break your
argument.
Multimodal Argument:
A multimodal argument uses two or more modes of composing to construct a cohesive argument.
Using multiple channels of communication can educate and persuade an audience and help you
convey your message effectively. Meaning is conveyed to your audience through varying
combinations of written text, and visual and auditory modes that work together to convince your
audience that your argument has merit.
Constructing a multimodal argument involves considering purpose, audience, and a medium to
present a strong, audience-focused and organized argument. As a multimodal author, you want to
intentionally and imaginatively combine different modes of communication in various strategic
arrangements throughout your argument to effectively and creatively convey your intended meaning.
Length:

Documentary – Minimum of ten (10) minutes w/valid sources. This should not be a video
of you simply discussing the topic/issue. Incorporate additional images, statistics, interviews,
etc. to help support your argument. Ex: 13th documentary. Videos should be uploaded as
MP4s or as YouTube links.

Podcast – Minimum of fifteen (15) minutes w/valid sources. Use existing podcasts as
examples to help you with this assignment. Audacity is a good site to use for creating
podcasts.
Blog – A series of at least four blogs with a minimum of one to two (1-2) pages for each
blog (single-spaced), along with a brief introduction to the blog that provides information
about who you are. You must include valid sources to support each blog. It may be useful to
write the blogs in response to the sources you have found on the topic, which will allow you
to challenge existing claims and communicate your perspectives on the issue. Use existing
blogs to help you with this assignment. The following sites are good for creating blogs:
WordPress.org, Wix, WordPress.com, Blogger, Tumblr, Medium, Squarespace, Joomla,
Ghost, Weebly.
Website – A combination of at least three (3) types of media. This can include other forms

*You only have to choose one of the types of multimodal arguments listed above. I am available for
FaceTime and Skype conferences should you have any questions. Be sure to check your file after
uploading it. If I cannot open it, I cannot grade it.
*You may use research/notes from your previous paper; however, you may not copy and paste your
original argument into this assignment. It is fine if you need to quote some material from the written
essay; however, huge chunks of text from the previous assignment will not be accepted. The goal is
to expand on your argument and your perspectives using multimodal forms. Consider how each
form will impact the audience and draft your assignment with this in mind.
Outline & Annotated Bibliography:
In addition to the multimodal argument, you will submit an outline and annotated bibliography for
the final project. The outline for this assignment will be more of a checklist on how you plan to

Bibliography:
The bibliographic information of the source (the title, author, publisher, date, etc.) is written in MLA
format, and the sources are in alphabetical order.
The annotations for each source are written in paragraph form. For the final assignment, you will
need to include at least ten sources for the annotated bibliography. You will write a
paragraph for each source (approx. 100-200 words) that summarizes the source. The summary
should reference the author’s main arguments and/or conclusions, as well as describe why the
source is useful for your particular topic or research question.

London, Herbert. “Five Myths of the Television Age.” Television Quarterly, vol. 10, no. 1, Mar.

Herbert London, the Dean of Journalism at New York University and author of several
books and articles, explains how television contradicts five commonly believed ideas. He uses
specific examples of events seen on television, such as the assassination of John Kennedy, to
illustrate his points. His examples have been selected to contradict such truisms as: “seeing is
believing”; “a picture is worth a thousand words”; and “satisfaction is its own reward.” London uses
logical arguments to support his ideas which are his personal opinion. He does not refer to any
previous works on the topic. London’s style and vocabulary would make the article of interest to any
reader. The article clearly illustrates London’s points, but does not explore their implications leaving
the reader with many unanswered questions.
Length: Outline (bullet points) and ten entries (100-200 words each) for the bibliography
Reflection:
Reflect on your understanding of argumentative writing prior to the course. How did the course
readings and assignments change or improve your understanding of argumentative writing?
What were your expectations for the course? How did the course change these expectations?
What perspectives/beliefs did you have before enrolling in the course? Did any of your
perspectives/beliefs change? Why or why not?
What is one thing you will take from the course, and how will you continue to improve your writing
in future classes?
How will you challenge issues related to race, class, and gender in the future?

multimodal argument, or provide the link to your multimodal argument in the comment box on the
submission page. Note: The final project, to include all parts, is worth 40% of your grade. It is
important that you follow the instructions for the assignment so that you can receive full credit.
Grading for Final Project:
Multimodal Argument: 80%
Bibliography & Outline: 10%
Reflection: 10%

Note: Make sure to save your final draft and rough drafts under separate names (Ex: FinalProject). If
you submit a rough draft, I will grade the rough draft. You will not be allowed to resubmit a paper
after the due date.
Plagiarism of any form will result in a zero. You are not allowed to recycle papers from a previous
class, and all source material must be properly cited.
Reminder: I will not grade late work. Since this is the final assignment for the course, I will not
accept it after the due date/time. Students who fail to submit the final project risk failing the course.
I will not answer questions or emails about the assignment the day before it is due.
