Fighting Crime & Police Respect The Broken Windows Theory Discussion Paper The Broken Windows Theory proved to be a huge success in fighting crime. In fact, it transformed New York City from one of the most dangerous and dirtiest cities in the world to one of the most safe and cleanest cities in the world. This pro-active and intelligence-lead policing came with a cost however, as we see polls show that public had a lower respect of police officers during this time (1990’s). This is most likely due to the proactiveness of police, rather than the typical responsive role in crime police have. In today’s policing, do we still agree with the Broken Windows Theory? Does it have a place in policing today?
