Gender Roles and Stereotypes Paper what gender role do men and women feel preesur to confrm to? Essay 2-Source Based Argument
Choose ONE of the following topics and write an essay of at least 4 pages double-spaced, Times
New Roman 12 pt. font, with 1 inch margins on each side. Essays must use at least 3 sources.
You may use the following articles, along with any you researched on your own. You must use at
least 2 sources we read and or watched in class. Draft 1 is due by Thursday, May 9th.
Academic writing is ultimately argumentative writing. As a college student, you are not only
asked to absorb information that you learn but also to engage the conversations
happening. Therefore, when writing an argument paper, you need to figure out both what the
conversation is and your personal position on the topic. In an argument you are doing more than
relating information-more than just summarizing and reviewing articles or stringing together a
bunch of quotes from your sources. Instead, you are synthesizing multiple sources, along with
your own opinion, into a cohesive, articulate argument to persuade someone on the topic you’ve
selected.
1. What gender roles do men and women feel pressured to conform to? How are each
affected by cultural expectations of the roles they are expected to play?
Identify examples from the texts we have read, the videos we watched, and any outside
material you find on the topic, as well as your own experiences and observations.
2. In the documentary, The Mask You Live In, Bryon Hurt discusses how hyper-masculinity
and hyper-violence are played out in Hollywood and are imitated by pop music and hip-
hop culture. How does media play a role in perpetuating stereotypical roles for men and
women, boys and girls?
Identify specific roles represented in the media form/s you choose to deconstruct
(movies, TV programs and/or advertisements, music videos, video games, etc.). Clearly
explain the role, describe how it is reflected in median and what it teachers girls and boys
about their gender roles. You may use the above articles, along with any other articles to
help you form your argument in addition to your own research on the issue.
3. In “Bros before Hos: The Guy Code,” Michael Kimmel states, “The most important dicta
of the bro code is you never rat out the brotherhood.” In Tony Porter’s TED Talk, he
states that “collectively, we as men are taught to have less value in women, to view them
as property and the objects of men.” What are the implications of these two belief
systems? How might these beliefs create a foundation for rape culture and violence
against women?
For this essay, use the above sources to help you form your argument. In addition, what
are some other examples of the ways the bro code has been manifested on college
campuses and other places in our culture? Use specific examples found in articles or
news reports.
4. Write about a topic that resonated with you from The Mask You Live In or one of the
articles we have read. Determine what the issue is, who it affects and how, and what its
implications are. You should also integrate work that is being done to counter the issue.
