If your selected article has more than one experiment included, then include information on only one experiment
from the study.
Your review should include the following sections:
I.
Purpose – Description of the why you selected the article you chose for this assignment
a. Why did you select this article for the article review assignment? What is intriguing about this particular
topic?
b. Identify at least three hypotheses for the study. What did the researchers predict or what did they
expect to happen?
II.
Variables – For this portion of the article review, you need to describe the variables
a. Specify the variables in the study.
b. Identify the independent and dependent variables in the study (name them).
c. Was the independent variable continuous or discrete in nature?
d. Was the dependent variable continuous or discrete in nature?
III.
Participants — In this section you just need to tell us a little bit about who participated in this study.
a. What is the sample size?
b. Demographic Information
(For example, how many people were there? Were they all from the same university? How many of
them were men? How many of them were women? Ages? Ethnicities? Any other information?)
IV.
Procedure
a. Briefly describe the procedures used in the study in one to two paragraphs.
b. State the type of study. Was it a non-experimental or an experimental study? Explain your answer.
c. Include a brief overview of the purpose of why the type of study chosen by researchers is best for testing
their hypotheses.
V.
Measures — For this section, specify what types of questionnaires or outcome measures were used.
a. Briefly describe each of the measures used in the study.
b. Did the measures for the independent variables feature a ratio, ordinal, interval, or nominal scale of
measurement? Explain.
c. Did the measures for the dependent variables feature a ratio, ordinal, interval, or nominal scale of
measurement? Explain.
VI.
Results — What are the main findings? You should have at least one result for each of hypotheses you
reported previously.
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
f.
g.
h.
What were the results or the main findings of the study?
What were the statistical tests used?
Why did they use the statistical tests selected and not some other statistical procedure?
Did they include descriptive or inferential statistics? What do you have as an example?
What is the significance level used for these tests?
What hypotheses were not found to be significant?
Were effect sizes captured? What effect sizes measures were used?
Which hypotheses had the largest effect sizes?
VII.
Conclusions — A good place to look for conclusions is in the discussion section, usually toward the end of
the article.
Interpretation of the results – What do these results mean in a broader sense or in terms of real-world
application?
b. Were these results consistent with the hypotheses?
a.
.
VIII. Critique — Typically researchers acknowledge limitations to their own work (in the discussion section), but
there may be some things that you notice that could be a problem for the study. For example, were the participants
mostly women (so we don’t know if men would respond the same way)?
a.
What are two limitations of the study identified by the researcher(s)? What could the researchers have
done that would have made the study better?
b. What limitations did you find with the study in terms of how variables are measured? Identify and
describe at least 2 limitations that are not mentioned by the researchers.
