In an ideal Rankine cycle with reheat, superheated steam vapor enters the turbine at 10 MPa and
480 °C, while the condenser pressure is 6 kPa. Steam expands through the first-stage turbine to
0.7 MPa and then is reheated to 480 °C. All answers should have 4 significant digits. Without
using special software (Excel and calculators are acceptable.), perform the following tasks:
1. Calculate the total heat addition, net work of the cycle, heat extraction through condenser,
and thermal efficiency of this ideal Rankine cycle with reheat. [50]
2. From scratch, calculate the same quantities assuming that the pump and each turbine
stage have an isentropic efficiency of 80%. [50]
3. Draw the T-s diagrams for both cycles on the same plot. [50]
4. Draw the p-v diagrams for both cycles on the same plot. [50]
5. For a pressure of 7 bar right after the first stage turbine in the ideal Rankine cycle, create
two plots: thermal efficiency as a function of the reheat temperature from 200 °C to
500 °C; and the net work, heat addition, and heat extraction on the same graph as a
function of the reheat temperature from 200 °C to 500 °C. [35]
6. Is there a local maximum or minimum thermal efficiency for 200 °C < Treheat < 500 °C?
Explain why or why not? If so, what is it, at what reheat temperature does it occur, and
how does one determine such an efficiency? [15]
7. What did you learn from this exercise? [5]

ENES232 Extra Credit Project #1
Due: May 8, 2019

In an ideal Otto cycle, before the compression process, the pressure is 14.7 psi and the
temperature is 530 °R. Without using special software (Excel and calculators are acceptable.),
perform the following tasks:
1. Calculate the thermal efficiency and the mean effective pressure for a compression ratio
of 8 and a maximum cycle temperature of 2000 °R. Specific heat is not constant. [50]
2. Draw the T-s and p-v diagrams for this cycle. [50]
3. For compression ratios of 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12, calculate in a table and plot thermal
efficiency and mean effective pressure as a function of maximum cycle temperatures
from 1000 °R to 4000 °R in increments of 1000 °R. [90]
4. Is there a local maximum or minimum thermal efficiency for any compression ratio in the
temperature range 1000 °R < Tcycle,max < 4000 °R? If so, what is it, at what maximum
cycle temperature does it occur, and how would you determine it? [10]
5. Is there a local maximum or minimum mean effective pressure for any compression ratio
in the temperature range 1000 °R < Tcycle, max < 4000 °R? If so, what is it, at what
maximum cycle temperature does it occur, and how would you determine it? [10]
6. Is there a value of the maximum cycle temperature, in which the mean effective pressure
is least dependent on compression ratio? If so, how would you determine the best
estimate for this value? [10]
7. What conclusions can you draw from your results? [10]
