Select One Choice
CHOICE 1:
Select one author from the list above, and develop and essay in response to his/her work(s). Develop your own
thesis. You can craft a focus around theme, structure of the text, use of literary devices, etc. You can connect the
selected text(s) to other reading from the semester, but you do not have to. You only have to write about one text,
but you are welcome to write about more than one. The essay should be about 3 pages in length and contain a
minimum of three quotes from the selected text(s).
CHOICE 2:
Attend the Visiting Writers Series at 7:00 pm on Monday, April 29, 2019. You must take a picture at the event and
attach it to your submission in Canvas. (Flip the page for essay assignment details.)
ENGL 236
The Literary Reading Review
The Reading
First, be on time!! Second, come with a couple of questions prepared. There’s a Q & A after each reading so you
can ask the author, for ex., where he/she gets his/her ideas from. Then, at the reading, take notes and afterwards
write down your thoughts while they are still fresh in your mind. Think about:
•
What did you expect the reading to be like? Was it what you expected? What surprised you at the reading?
Interested you?
•
How would you describe the author’s work? What subjects were used? What themes did she/he seem to
touch upon? Any poems or moments you particularly liked or touched you? Why? Did you find the work
easy to understand? Why or why not?
•
What kind of reader was the author— informal, chatty, no chatter, monotone, lively, serious, funny, etc.?
How well did the reader “perform” the poems? Etc.
The Paper
Then, please write a response paper in which like a movie critic you critique the reading and discuss the experience
of going to the event. The essay should address each of the following:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Summarize the evening’s reading (i.e., what happened)
Respond to the reader’s style of delivery, manner, (performance), etc.
Respond to the work itself
Discuss your overall impressions/opinions of the event
In other words, the paper should be a response to the author, the author’s work, and the experience of going to the
reading. Tell me what happened and what you thought about it.
The essay should be about 3 pages in length. Review materials in the author background packet found in the
Major Assignments module in Canvas to help inform your essay.
CHOICE 3:
*This choice is only for people who are reading from the Longman. Select an author/text from the Longman
Anthology of World Literature, vols. D, E, and F that was not included in our course readings this semester. Read
about the author and read the work and then determine whether or not it should be included in the course. Develop
an essay that specifically (including quotes and page numbers) defends your choice. If it should be included, what
text would you remove from the curriculum and why? If the text shouldn’t be included in the course curriculum,
explain why not? Make sure to include the criteria by which you will assess the text and explain them thoroughly.
The essay should be about 3 pages in length and contain a minimum of three quotes from the selected text(s).
If evidence of plagiarism is detected, it is an automatic zero on the assignment.
