Peer discussion 1

In this week’s discussion we will be talking about two organizations that help us to keep up Nursing Excellence. Although there are many organizations I chose to talk about The Joint Commission and the World Health Organization. I will discuss the purpose of each of these organizations, and the roles they have in nursing education and practice. I will also discuss how they impact the nursing profession, and how they influence nursing excellence.

The purpose of the Joint Commission is to make sure that the most up to date and safest practices are implemented into healthcare and that the care of the community is always improving to make sure that everyone is getting the best possible care. The World Health Organizations purpose is to be responsible for leadership on a global level, to organize research all over the world. Giving healthcare options in their evidenced based policies, and monitoring health trends all over the world. (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, National League of Nursing, QSEN Institute, The Joint Commission, World Health Organization 2012-2014) Many times the Facility in which I work, provides us with information from the Joint Commission that is shown to be the best possible practice, and how we can implement it into our job. Such as adopting a Quantitative Blood loss for our patient’s after delivering a baby, so we have a better idea of the blood they may be losing at or after delivery.

The impact that the Joint Commission has on nursing practice is that it sets many quality standards for health care organization so that they can provide the safest of quality care to their patient’s. The Joint Commission also evaluates their performances to make sure that there is follow through with the standards of care they have set. (The Joint Commission, 2014) The World Health Organization’s (WHO) impact on Nursing practice is a little different because it is more focused on their Nursing Now campaign that focus’ more on improving the status of nurses and enable nurses to contribute as much as they can in order for WHO to achieve global health care. (World Health Organization, 2018)

The Joint Commission (TJC) plays a large role in nursing education, and in nursing research. TJC provides education to staff for improvement of the way the organization runs, it also is continuing for these organization and then is thoroughly reviewed by TJC. That way they know what is being educated is being followed through with. They provide ongoing support and advice for the organizations and the staff members to help them provide the safest most up to date care. They are heavily involved in making sure that what they are educating is evidenced based care and most up to date, researching everything and helping to implement policies. (The Joint Commission, 2018) The World Health Organization (WHO) plays a role in nursing education by not only trying to get more health care workers before the 21st century but to also give those and the current health care workers, better skills, competencies and clinical experience that they may be lacking. The WHO has so many different research studies that there are too many to even count. They are current on their studies and they are up to date with the health trends from around the world. They play a huge important role in nursing research. (The World Health Organization, n.d.)

The Joint Commission and the World Health Organization, both provide nursing excellence by being resources for health care systems. TJC is a resource for the United States and the WHO is global but they both are resources for many health care systems. They are both non-profit organizations that provide many different accreditations to different organizations. They are both very important to the safety of our patient’s and educating not only staff but also the organizations that they are employed at. I support both organization’s due to the good evidenced-based research that they do, and to the education they provide to everyone.

In conclusion both The Joint Commission and the World Health Organization are working towards the same goals, just with different territories. They both have a large impact on nursing practices, education, research and are excellent resources for multiple health care organizations.

Peer discussion 2

The purpose of this discussion is to select two nursing organizations presented in this week’s lecture and identify the impact these organizations have in nursing. I will evaluate both organizations describing their purpose and role in nursing education and research. I will also explain how each of the two organizations play a part in Nursing Excellence and how it impacts nursing practice. Nursing excellence encompasses a professional nurse’s responsibility to advocate for the patient in all aspects of care by using nursing best practices. This includes providing individualized attention to every person they provide care for. Professional organizations help us to be successful in our careers by providing invaluable resources. I have chosen to showcase the World Health Organization and National Academy of Medicine for this discussion and highlight their influence in nursing excellence.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a national organization comprised of over 7000 people working together all over the world to provide the highest standard of care to every human being regardless of race, religion, economic status or political belief (World Health Organization, 2019). The WHO impacts nursing practice by monitoring and tracking health data from all over the globe. This aids in scientific research on health topics that are affecting the entire population. The WHO uses this research and data to provide leadership the support they need for ongoing development of legislation and creating improved evidence-based practice in nursing. This organization provides for nursing excellence through advocacy for affordable human healthcare across the globe, political activism by working and supporting its members nationally in areas of academia, and to work with all levels of government to ensure health is a firm political agenda (World Health Organization, 2019). I would support this organization as I feel their mission to serve the vulnerable, provide health promotion and to keep the world safe is a heartfelt statement that should be shared not just by nurses, but all human beings.

The second organization I would like to identify is National Academy of Medicine (NAM). The purpose of this organization is to improve health for all individuals by providing trusted advice nationally and globally based on advancing science and health equity (National Academy of Medicine, 2018). NAM is an independent evidence-based scientific advisor. This impacts the nursing practice by providing factual scientific data on human health issues. In order to do so, NAM collaborates with organizations worldwide in a multitude of disciplinaries committed to providing a healthier future for all. NAM along with the other entities that make up the National Academies of Sciences, provide nurses with scholarship opportunities. The Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in Residence programs purpose is to acknowledge nurses who are outstanding leaders and to strengthen their expertise, so they can play an integral role in health policy development at a national level (National Academy of Medicine, 2018). Similar to the World Health Organization, NAM provides nursing excellence by dedicating its services for the health and advocacy to all by promoting affordable high value healthcare. NAM is also a leader in health policy by providing unbiased evidence-based research to create a culture of health. I would also support this organization based on their commitment to research and science to provide best practices for all.

In conclusion, all the organizations listed in our lecture hold immeasurable value to not only their stakeholders, but also the population. In my current nursing role, I rely on organizations like this to help provide factual data and rationale as to why I want certain policy or procedures to be changed or put in place. Without organizations like this, the process for change would be a challenge and inconsistent across the practice. It is through their efforts that we as nurses can care for our patients with the most up to date evidence-based practices. Nursing excellence would not be possible without the collaborative support of agencies from around the world.
