Write a 1,050- to 1,400- word paper critiquing your chosen journal article.
Include the following information in your summary and critique of the journal article:
A brief summary of what the research is about – Michelle
Evaluate the Introduction/Literature Review. -Michelle
o Comment on the statement of the research problem, question or hypothesis; organization, flow and content of the literature review; and rationale or importance of the study
Evaluation on the Methodology: – Cynthia
Comment on the sample size, sampling method, measures/data collection instrument and method used
Evaluation of the Research Design: – Brian
Is the design appropriate to address the research question?
Were the independent variable(s) and dependent variable(s) clearly identified?
Identify the independent variable(s) and dependent variable(s).
Evaluation of Descriptive Statistics: – Kerry
Identify and discuss the descriptive statistics used to describe the data.
Do you think the methods used to describe the data are appropriate and sufficient? Provide reasons for your response?
Evaluation of Discussion/Conclusion: Michelle
Are there any limitations identified in the article? If so, discuss how they were addressed.
Are the any ethical issues identified in the article? If so, discuss how they were addressed.
Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines; including a title page and a reference page (No abstract is necessary). Evaluation of the Research Design
I believe the design is appropriate to address the research question because it uses a
combination of Quantitative and Qualitative data to support the information being
provided. Through Quantitative research there was an ability to gain insight in the relationship
between variables presented in context of the preventive method of intervention which was used
to reduce substance use amongst children in families with a parent in methadone treatment. The
qualitative aspect in the study conducted explored the participants experiences while they
underwent the study for two years. The treatment options were based on the social development
for the children of parents who suffered from drug abuse. It included components that addressed
risk and protective factors for adolescent with substance abuse factors associated with parent
relapse after drug as a means to deter the children to refer to substance abuse. (Haggerty,
Skinner, Fleming, 2008).
The independent variable would be the age ranges of the participants in the study as well
as the time frames in which the research was conducted. The dependent variable would be the
occurrence of substance use as it pertained to the gender of the participants. The independent
variable in reference to the specific children, i.e. boy or girl participating in the study who
resorted to drug abuse would mostly include those who were predisposed of the antecedent of
drug use within the household prior to intervention.
Evaluation of Descriptive Statistics
The article, Long-term Effects of the Focus on Families Project on Substance Use
Disorders (SUDS) Among Children of Parents in Methadone Treatment, the descriptive
statistics used to describe the data are sufficient and appropriate, and include: observational
studies and correlation research. The study observed the long?term effects of a family?based
preventive intervention on SUDS among the children of heroin?addicted parents in methadone
treatment, (Haggerty, Skinner, Fleming,
, 2008). 130 families were randomly assigned to
treatment plus the Focus on Families (FOF) or to a methadone clinic treatment control condition
between 1991 and 1993. The study used data from a long-term follow-up in 2005, measured by
the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), when these participants ranged in age
from 15-29 years and examined the development of SUDS among the 177 children (56.84%
male) involved in the program, (Haggerty, Skinner, Fleming,
, 2008). Through individualized
home-based services and group parent-training workshops at the methadone clinics, the
intervention was delivered and taught skills for avoiding relapse to drug abuse and parenting
skills. In the hazard of developing SUDS, survival analyses were used to assess control
differences versus intervention.
There was evidence that the impact of the intervention was different for girls and boys.
Differences between control participants and intervention were not statistically significant among
girls, and in the opposite directions of males. Males in intervention condition were at lower risk
of developing SUDS than the males in the control condition. The intervention significantly
reduced the diagnosis of SUDS for males in the FOF intervention compared to the males in the
control condition, (Haggerty, Skinner, Fleming,
, 2008). The descriptive statistics in the article
are sufficient and appropriate because they have assisted in organizing, summarizing and
interpreting the long-term effects of the FOF project on substance use disorders (SUDS) among
children of parents in methadone treatment. In this article, the statistical techniques have a goal
of inference. The data is from a sample of children of parents in methadone treatment. The
descriptive statistics in the article provide how much difference or diversity there is in the
variable, (Monette, Sullivan, & DeJong, 2014).
