ANTHRO4020 University of Colorado Police and The Community Essay HI! Below is the outline of the Essay and requirements:please don’t hesitate to ask me any questions!!! 🙂 Essay Question: What causes the disconnect between police and the community that they
serve? How can we interpret resistance to policing? Seeing this as an interaction between
two opposing forces, what are some problems that emerge as the result of community
resistance to reform?
What to Include
You are allowed to bring up case studies that were not discussed in class. However, these case
studies must always be tied back to the terms and vocabulary that we use in this course. You
will be evaluated based on technical presentation (i.e. spelling, grammar, and coherency) as
well as the demonstration that you have read the course material and are able to engage it in
a practical case study. You do not need to invent new ideas or make grand pronouncements.
Rather you must simply find what parts of the literature you agree with and what you do
not.

Question: How can Ethnography interpret the rule of law?

Structure
The essay must have clear introduction with thesis, body with supporting information, and
conclusion where the thesis is once again stated. Imagine an essay as an hour glass: where the
beginning and ends are wide and the middle is narrow. The structure of your essay will have
a similar shape. There will be a wide-ranging question at the beginning and a more
concentrated focus towards the middle only return to a wide-ranging question at the end.
Questions
First and very simply ask yourself, “who, what, when, where, why, and how?” You must
clearly state who you are speaking about, how they relate to a specific subject, when and
where the ideas you discuss can be observed in real life, and how and why your essay is
relevant to the course. Do not summarize. Rather, always return to these questions and your
central thesis.
Format
The essays must be presented in a Word or PDF file. You must use 12-point, Times New
Roman font. Paragraphs must be double spaced with 1-inch margins. The essay must be
between 400 and 800 words, or approximately two pages. You must include citations in
proper MLA or Chicago-style format.
