7-4 you can refer to the attached. Motivation. If an unauthorized person is able to access our access point,
this person will be able to access information traveling over our Wi-Fi
network. The consequences can be severe, so the company protects the
access point by having secure login. To log in, you must know a
passphrase.
Relevant Employees: Everyone.
Compliance: Mandatory and Important.
Specific Cautions:
Passphrase Length. The passphrase MUST be at least 20
characters. Shorter passphrases can be cracked easily. The
employee designated as the network administrator is responsible
for ensuring this.
Sharing the Passphrase. The passphrase may not seem secret
because everybody in the firm knows it. However, people outside
the firm should not know iteven employee family members.
Never give out the passphrase to someone who is not an
employee, even for temporary use. (The passphrase rarely
changes, so the unauthorized person can have access for a
considerable length of time. Furthermore, the networks signals
spread beyond the building. Anyone outside the building who
knows the passphrase can read our traffic and send messages
into the network.) Responsibility: All employees.
Changing the Passphrase. The passphrase MUST be changed if it
is given out to an unauthorized person or if an authorized
person leaves the firm or is otherwise barred from the network.
This requires changing the passphrase on the access point. It
also requires changing it on all devices using the network.
Responsibility: Network administrator.
Reporting unauthorized sharing. If you share the passphrase or
know that someone else has, you MUST report this to the
network administrator. If you report it and the passphrase is not
changed in three days, you MUST report this to the manager.
Giving out the passphrase without authorization is a serious
problem, but to encourage reporting, no punitive action will be
taken if the security lapse is reported promptly. Responsibility:
Everybody.
Authorization to make changes. Only the person designated as the
network administrator may make changes to the access point. If that
person is not present, someone else appointed by management can
make required changes. However, there must be a report on this action,
including why it was necessary, who made the changes, and what
changes were made (in detail.) When the network administrator returns,
it will be his or her responsibility to ensure that the documented
changes were actually made, check that no other changes were made,
document any discrepancies, and send this report to the duty manager
and the president.
