I chose to write about Anne Frank’s Diary. I picked this because I have a love for learning more and more
about the Holocaust, but I also feel that we can learn from it no matter how many times we read it. I also
have some Jewish blood, so some of my ancestors were involved in this mass killing.
I feel that Anne’s diary represents things about the Holocaust that most people do not know, and didn’t
know existed. Her diary talks about her life before being sent to the camps, what life was like living in the
annex, what it was like living with several other people and all the fighting that happened.
I feel we can learn a lot about what times were like for the Jewish during the raid and what it was like for a
family to be in hiding during the worst war times. We get to see first hand what life would have been like
for us if we had lived in an annex with other families during the war. We get to see what life would have
been like with minimal food, in a crammed space, trying to make sure we stayed as quiet as possible.
When Anne was writing her diary, she didn’t know it would become a worldwide seller that told the world
what the war was really like. Anne wrote for her, but I feel the publishers achieved something greater than
they expected. Her diary told a story from the perspective of a young girl living in a world full of hate and
hiding. It let us into her mind during the times before being caught, it let us see what kind of things can
happen from many people living in a tiny area. So, yes I believe the publishers were very successful in
many ways.

The artifact for this modules discussion I have chosen is the statue of Zeus at Olympia.
I think the universal idea for the statue was to honor Zeus. He is believed to be a powerful God, the God
of Gods according to Greek mythology- and the statue was meant to represent him in the Temple of
Olympia. (Enduring ideas resource link will not load for me-sorry).
It think what could be inferred from studying the Zeus statue is obviously he is seen as a very powerful
God-A king of God’s, being built 40 feet tall, if he were to stand he would take the roof off his temple. He
is holding Nike in one hand, who is the Goddess of victory, a scepter with an eagle perched on top. If you
believe in Greek mythology or have studied it, you might know that the eagle served as a personal
messenger to Zeus. The statue was created by Greek sculptor Pheidias. I think his purpose for this
creation was simple- to honor the Greek God Zeus.

What is the universal idea that this poster represents?
World War I posters like this one had four basic objectives:
Recruitment
Conservation of resources
Raising Revenue
Morale and/or propaganda
James Montgomery Flagg’s “I Want YOU for the U.S. Army” poster exemplifies Objective #1:
Recruitment. This relates to the universal idea of “Conflict” (from the Enduring Ideas resource). As stated
in the resource, “throughout history, conflict and struggle have affected groups by both separating and
bonding them, at times resulting in political or social change.” The poster is about bonding Americans
together to fight a common enemy, which during WWI was the “Central Powers.”
What can be learned from studying the ARTIFACT that you chose in terms of the culture and context in
which it was created?
What I learned from studying the CULTURAL CONTEXT of this poster is that it was originally published
as the cover for the July 6, 1916, issue of Leslie’s Weekly with the title “What Are You Doing for
Preparedness?” and went on to become the most famous poster in the world with over four million copies
printed between 1917 and 1918, as the United States entered World War I and began sending troops and
supplies into war zones. Because of its overwhelming popularity, the image was later adapted for use in
World War II. Upon presenting President Franklin Delano Roosevelt a copy of the poster, Flagg remarked
that he had been his own model for Uncle Sam to save the modeling fee. Roosevelt was impressed and
replied: “I congratulate you on your resourcefulness in saving model hire. Your method suggests Yankee
forebears.”
What do you believe was the creator’s intention in creating the ARTIFACT that you chose?
I think that James Montgomery Flagg’s INTENTION in creating this poster was to communicate a clear
message: to join the US Army. He did this by creating a powerful and compelling design incorporating
both imagery and text. The dominant image of this design (“Uncle Sam,” a self-portrait of the designer!)
occupies the upper three-quarters of the composition and is set against a brilliant white background,
which makes the patriotic colors (red, white, and blue) of the design stand out brightly. A bearded and
top-hatted Uncle Sam stares out of the composition and points directly at the viewer in a compelling
manner as he exhorts: “I want YOU for the U.S. Army.”
In conclusion, designer James Flagg was able to communicate the universal idea of “Conflict” in his
famous poster to bond Americans together to fight a common enemy. My research of the Cultural
Context of this poster revealed that it was originally published as a magazine cover and went on to
become the most famous poster in the world with over four million copies printed between 1917 and
1918, as the United States entered World War I. Flagg’s intentionin creating this design was to support
the war effort by encouraging people to enlist in the army. It is so interesting to notice how knowledge of
cultural contexts can enhance our understanding and appreciation of artifacts!
