CASE STUDY REGARDING MORAL STATUS

The issue of abortion has been a great debate for several decades, where some people
consider it is right, while others view it as a wrong act Megan (Best, 2018). This topic has
contributed to the emergence of pro-life and pro-choice movements whereby the pro-lifers are
1
against abortion while the pro-choice people support it. According to the arguments presented by
both sides, their claims appear to be true with equal strength. That is the reason why the topic has
led to the emergence of a great debate that does not end. However, almost all the people who are
rooted in religious beliefs appear to be pro-life, while those against religious practices seem to be

prochoice ( Lee, 2004) . Several aspects have been discussed where some of them include
Christian’s view of humans nature, the theories used in the Fetal Abnormality Case Study, the
influence of the method on the recommendations for action, as well as the assumption that the
author of the document agrees with.
The Christian View of the Nature of Human Persons
Based on the Christianity view of human nature, Christians are believed to have the

choice to choose the acts that they engage in. Human persons can decide whether or not to
participate in sinful actions. However, when a Christian sins, he or she has the opportunity to

repent and ask for forgiveness from Christ Jesus. There are five significant properties that people
need to consider when acquiring moral properties. These include sentience, relationship, moral
agency, individual properties, as well as cognitive properties. Based on these properties, the
theory of moral agency is the one that seems to be compatible with Christian’s view of human
nature. In this case, the moral agency indicates that people can be moral agents when they can
judge the right and the wrong thing. With the case study regarding Fetal Abnormality, Jessica is
supposed to decide on whether to do the right thing or the wrong thing based on her beliefs. In
this case, Jessica is supposed to understand that humans are God’s creation as they were made in

his own image. Based on this argument, abortion is not supposed to be taken as the best option
despite the anomalies that the fetus displays.
Theory or Theories Necessary to Determine the Moral Status of the Fetus
Based on the case study regarding Fetal Abnormality, there are several theories necessary
to be applied by Dr. Wilson, Marco, Jessica, and Maria on determining the fetus’ moral status.
For example, cognitive properties can be used by Dr. Wilson since it indicates that humans are
supposed to applied knowledge and perception based on the situation at hand. Therefore, Dr.
Wilson is supposed to advise Jessica based on the condition being experienced. According to this
theory, abortion is the best option since the fetus lacks moral status. Besides, Maria applies the
relationship theory since she tries to convince Jessica how blessed a woman is when she gets a
child. Therefore, Maria advises Jessica not to consider abortion at all. Moreover, Maria
encourages Jessica to accept the will of God. In this case, the theory shows the relationship
between children and God, thus giving the fetus a moral status that seems to be immoral to
consider abortion. Furthermore, Jessica applies the theory of moral agents by considering her
financial situation and the teachings in the bible regarding abortion. In this case, the theory gives
Jessica the ability to judge whether to proceed with the abortion or not. Lastly, Marco applies the
relationship theory to consider how he will be the father to the disabled child and the difficulties
they will experience with Jessica. However, he is ready to approve any decision that Jessica
makes.

that determine the obligation of a fetus. Since people view fetuses differently, it is challenging to

develop criteria for deciding action is right or wrong, especially when deciding about abortion.

However, when considering a moral agency, the fetus is deemed to have no moral status, and
therefore it is not viewed as a complete human being ( Oderberg, 2008) . This is because humans
can make their own decisions, but the fetus cannot. However, some people give a fetus a moral
status, and therefore they consider abortion as a wrong act since they view it as a human being.
Besides, those who do not give a fetus a moral status usually support abortion. Therefore, the
decision on whether to support abortion or not is determined by the belief on whether a fetus has
moral status or not.
The Theory That I Agree With
As a healthcare provider, I agree with the theory that gives no moral status to a fetus. In
this case, I consider cognitive properties to be the best theory to apply based on the case study
regarding Fetus Abnormalities. In this case, abortion is the best action to take due to the
consideration of the health condition of the fetus. This argument lies with the idea given by Dr.
Wilson that a fetus cannot decide for themselves since they have no moral status. The theory
allows Jessica to take abortion as a recommended action since it given her and her husband to
choose between terminating the pregnancy or allowing the fetus to grow. Besides, the theory of
cognitive properties is also supported by law, depending on the situation of the mother or that of
the fetus (Foster, 2017). In general, by considering the health condition and the complication
displayed by the fetus, Jessica should consider taking the idea of abortion. By so doing, Jessica
and his husband Marco will not experience many challenges on how to raise the child and cater
for his or her medication after birth since they are not financially stable.
