University of California Berkeley Manhattan Borough of New York City Paper In this module, we’ve looked at representations of NYC as a dreamscape of mobility and self-fashioning, especially for (e)migrants and immigrants. Think about our readings in Module 1, and choose one example from one text that relates to these problems.

* Identify one or two sentences of narrative or lines of poetry that relate to these themes.

* Type the sentences/lines into your post, paying close attention to the words and details that strike you as important. (Remember that it’s great to develop the habit of taking notes and marking interesting words or parts of all the texts we read in this course. Don’t be afraid to mark up the text, track emerging themes, and take notes on your ideas as you read, even if you’re not sure yet how these ideas fit together. Annotating and reading closely will help you prepare to write thoughtful discussion posts and papers.)

* Write a post (300-600 words) that closely analyzes the example you quote. You might find it helpful to think about questions like:

What words and details in these sentences/lines seem interesting, important, confusing, or conflicting?
How do these sentences/lines portray some aspect of NYC? (Keep in mind that a question like this might have more than one ‘answer.’)
What kinds of dreams and ideals do these sentences/lines connect to NYC and/or the U.S.?
How do they imply a relationship between NYC and an ‘American’ dream, and what do the sentences/lines suggest about NYC as an ‘American’ city?

Remember that your post doesn’t need to repeat or synthesize the lectures or materials we’ve covered in Module 1. Instead, use your post to work through your ideas and analysis in writing, then share your thoughts with the class. Once you’ve made your post, read over your colleagues’ posts and respond to at least two. (Remember that composing two responses is a required part of this week’s discussion assignment.)
