How Can Social Allies Dismantle the Masters House Article Essay The Master’s house, in all cases, can be viewed as a system in society where a certain type of understanding, belief or stereotype is already established and only gets added upon because of the way in which it was originally drafted. The Master Narrative is understood as the one sided story in which a society is taught and lives by. From our unit 1 understanding, we see that, “The traditional master narrative we’ve learned in our history classes says that this country was founded by Americans of European ancestry and that our ideas are rooted in Western civilization. It is a powerful narrative BUT it is a mistaken story of America’s history.” What this means is that we are taught and conditioned to believe that the one sided story we are taught is correct. If this said Master Narrative is the Master’s house, as explained by Audre lorde in her article, “The Master’s Tools will Never Dismantle the Master’s House,” then it is fair to assume that the Master’s tools are/is the ignorance of the people in the society unwilling and unable to accept the differences in the world around them all while not being able to feel empathy for others. Since the Master’s House and Tools are a metaphorical reference to the period of U.S. history that involved the use of African Americans as slaves, then we see the tools as instruments that help build a physical structure, in this case a House that the Master lives in. Since the house is the foundation, we can connect this to the central idea of the Master Narrative being a foundation and we can connect the Master’s Tools as objects that add on to the foundation, for example the ignorance of people in a society. To further support this claim all while examining an article by Audre Lorde titled, “The Master’s Tools will Never Dismantle the Master’s House,” we see that, “Difference must be not merely tolerated, but seen as acfund of necessary polarities between which our creativity can spark like a dialectic. Only then does the necessity for interdependency become unthreatening. Only within that interdependency of different strengths, acknowledged and equal, can the power to seek new ways of being in the world generate.” What Lorde is stressing with this quote in her article is that differences amongst people should not only be tolerated as a way to pass it by but it should be necessary in sparking creativity. She says that the strengths associated with everyone’s unique strengths that are accepted and respected are the keys to finding new ways to understand the world. She says that differences and diversities are necessary to break away from the master narrative in order to have different points of view. As supported by the student speaker from Week 8’s fearless Friday talks, “we have to use interdependence because we cannot do this by ourselves.” What this gentleman is referring to is picking at everyone’s understanding and merging them all together to create a bigger picture. In addition, Peggy McIntosh’s article titled “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” explains how there is an obvious disadvantage in society based off of color. Macintosh explains how “As a white person, I realized I had been taught about racism as something that puts others at a disadvantage, but had been taught not to see on if its corollary aspects, white privilege, which puts me at an advantage.” This demonstrates clearly how the Master Narrative is the Master’s House, also known as our foundation, and the ignorance of people are/is the Master’s Tools. If Macintosh was taught as a child to accept the differences around her, then she would not have been ignorant to the fact that white privilege existing.

In addition, in the video “Cracking the Codes: Joy DeGruy, A trip to the grocery store,” the African American lady is speaking about a experience she once had at a grocery store where she went through institutional racism, being assumed to be a troublemaker and being broke just because she was black and had to stand and get humiliated at the cashier just because the cashier assumed she had written her a bad check and was involved in an Individualistic fallacy where she was justifying her actions as non racist. At that point her sister in law, who was half black and half white, stepped in and the speaker explains how, “She used her white privilege to educate and make right a situation that was wrong. That’s what you can do. Every single day.” This powerful quote from the speaker shows how the cashier was playing into her own Master Narrative. She seemed to be the type of person who would assume that black people are bad, trouble makers, and broke alongside any other stereotypes associated with black people. Her ignorance and lack of understanding of what is around her is the tools and the Master Narrative is her belief that what she knows is the only way to act hence supporting the idea that the tools cannot dismantle the house because they are cohesive. Since the Master Narrative is understood as the one sided story in which a society is taught and lives by, a social ally will be able to dismantle this idea and ignorance. In Andrea Ayvazian, “Interrupting the Cycle of Oppression,” she mentions, “An ally is a member of a dominant group in our society who works to dismantle any form of oppression from which she or he receives the benefit. Allied behavior means taking personal responsibility for the changes we know are needed in our society, and so often ignore or leave to others to deal with.” What this means is that a social ally is a person who decides to look at a problem and take matters into their own hands and not wait around for something to happen. A social ally is somebody who will be able to dismantle the Master’s House which is the Master Narrative because they have the drive, the voice, and the power to be able to show people the multiple sides of one story or belief. For example, people who assume that the establishment of race laws will get rid of racism fall under the legalistic fallacy because they are so in tuned with seeing a one way answer and believe that the one law created solves the problem but are blind to the fact of all the individual cases. This is where a social ally will promote and speak out in order to show the multiple sides. While looking at a situation in which an ignorant man with a certain set of beliefs on immigration, we see how a social ally would be perfectly suited in this situation to help him undergo a mental and spiritual change. In the documentary, “30 Days: Immigration,” we see how one man named Frank George, “whose goal is to stop illegal immigration into the United States, goes to live with a family of illegal Mexican immigrants in a tiny apartment in the heart of Los Angeles.” His set beliefs that all immigrants are bad criminals who solely do damage to our country puts him in a Master Narrative mindset which prevents him from seeing the reality. When asked about his belief on amnesty of immigrants by one of the family members, Frank George replies, “I see the dissolution of the immigration problem, they will tear apart this country.” His stubbornness blinds him and he does not want to accept any other explanation. A social ally will benefit in this case by providing a voice for the other side and allowing George to be more accepting all while dismantling the Master’s House piece by piece.
