Winter 2020, Dr. Holmvall
General Assignment Instructions
This assignment is to be completed ON YOUR OWN. You may use the lecture slides and the
course textbook as resources; I do not expect you to use other sources (with the exception of the
on-line career-planning site, relevant to Part 1 of the assignment). If you only use our course
sources, you do not need to provide citations in your assignment. If you choose to consult other
sources (including websites, books, articles), please use APA format to reference your sources
both in the body of your assignment and in a reference list at the end of the assignment (again, I
do not expect you to draw on additional sources beyond those noted above, but I will give you the
flexibility to do so if you would like!).
Please complete the assignment in a separate document. Please make sure to number your
responses (e.g., Part 1, Question 1). Save the completed assignment as a .doc or .docx file with
your A# included at the end (e.g., Final Assignment 2020_A00000000) and submit it via the Final
Assignment dropbox on our course Brightspace page. Please note that, if you like, you can submit
the information from the career-planning listing as a separate document; if you choose to do so,
label the document with “career” after your A number). Unless you are instructed otherwise,
please make sure to use complete sentences (no bullet points) when responding to the questions.
For this assignment, I will be evaluating the quality and clarity of your writing.
Please consult the instructions for each question or question set in terms of which aspects of the
course I would like you to draw on. In all cases, please make sure to incorporate as much course
specific content as you can! You must USE YOUR OWN WORDS when responding to the
questions – do not lift wording from the textbook or slides (similarly, do not lift wording from any
other sources you may use). I will be evaluating the clarity of your thinking and logic as well as
the accuracy and depth of your understanding of course content.
If you need any assignment components clarified, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. If I
have any clarifications that you should be aware of, I will post them on Brightspace. The
assignment starts on the next page and has two major parts. Part 1 is marked out of 33 marks (and
is worth 15% of your total course grade) and Part 2 is marked out of 5 marks (and is worth 5% of
your course grade). The maximum page limit for your assignment is 6 pages double-spaced PLUS
your career-planning listing. Please use 12pt times new roman font and one-inch margins.
1
PART 1: Worth 15% of your grade
The first part of this assignment will draw primarily on course content on Work Stress (Chapter
13, and lecture content), with the option to tie in information from other content we have covered
in the course.
Task:
I would like you to think into the future, about what your ideal future job would be (e.g.,
Accountant, HR specialist, Restaurant Manager, Professor, Pastry Chef). Once you have a job in
mind, I would like you to search for information about this job using the career-planning tool of
the Government of Canada Job Bank. You can search the database using the following link (use
the “search by occupation” option in the first pull-down menu and you can leave the location
field blank):
https://www.jobbank.gc.ca/career-planning
You may have to do a few searches to find the “right” job for you. Please make sure that the job
you choose would allow you to answer the questions below. Once you have the listing for the
job, please provide the job title and the 4-digit NOC code given in the listing and also copy the
content from the “description” tab and the “skills” tab into a word document or PDF and submit
with your assignment. There are other tabs that you may find useful (e.g., “wages”,
“requirements”) and you can use information from those tabs as well for your assignment if you
like. If you use information from other tabs, include the tab content with your assignment as
well. For the questions below, I’d primarily like you to think about the information contained
in the description and skills tabs of the listing.
Please answer the following questions:
1. Provide the job title and NOC code as noted above (and be sure to include, either at the
end of the document, or in a separate document, the information from the tabs noted
above). (1 mark is allocated for doing so!)
2. With the main duties of this job and the required skills/expertise in mind, what do you
think are the main stressors that you are likely to encounter on the job? Pick five specific
stressors that you would like to discuss; indicate why you think each stressor might be
present in the job. Be sure to choose at least one chronic stressor and one acute stressor to
discuss (with the remaining 3 stressors being of whichever type you choose). For each
stressor you note, indicate its type and your logic for why it is a particular type (i.e.,
chronic or acute). (10 marks total)
3. Now, let’s assume that you’ve been hired into an organization to hold the job position
that you’ve chosen for this assignment. For this question, in choosing your
interventions/actions (relevant to parts a and b), you can draw on the broad content for
this course (i.e., you can discuss any of the material we have covered including material
from Chapter 13 of course! Be precise and specific with your terminology).
2
a. Outline 3 specific actions/interventions that an organization can undertake that
you think would help with the potential stress that you might encounter in this
specific job. Think about the specific stressors you have noted for Question #2.
For each action/intervention you propose, classify it in terms of what level of
intervention it is (i.e., primary, secondary, tertiary) and provide some logic as to
why you have classified it in the way that you have. (9 marks)
b. Now, I’d like you to think about what YOU could do to help mitigate or lessen
stress in this job. Think about 3 specific actions that YOU can potentially
implement to help you manage your workplace stress. Note: do not discuss the
same interventions you have proposed above for the organization. What aspect of
the stress process does each of your actions target (stressors, stress, or strain)?
Provide some logic for what component each of your actions target. Note, if you
like, you can draw on stress recovery for one action here, but be sure you tie in
NEW information and activities in Question 4 below. (9 marks)
4. Now, I’d like you to think about what you know specifically about stress recovery
processes. This question does not draw on the career/job listing you used for the
questions above. I’d like you to choose one activity that you can SAFELY do and that
might allow you to recover from any stress that you may be currently feeling, for
example, relating to school or work. I would like you to spend at least 30 minutes on that
activity during a day before this assignment is due (e.g., in between some school work!).
This could be anything from listening to music, taking photos, playing with a pet or
getting some exercise. If you are feeling guilty about taking the break, remember it is
part of your assignment! I would like you to outline which activity you chose to engage
in and relate the activity back to the stress recovery terminology and content we
covered in lecture; that is, why did you choose this activity? How does your choice
relate to what we know about stress recovery? Did the activity help you to feel
recovered? (4 marks)
Part 2: Worth 5% of your grade
For this second part of your assignment, I would like you to think about ALL of the
content that we have covered in the course. I would like you to tell me about the 3 most
impactful pieces of knowledge or concepts that you have learned from the course. These
are the things that are impactful for you, that you will take with you into your future
careers or into your life in general. This part of the assignment is marked out of 5 points
and I am grading your adherence to the guidelines of the task and the depth/accuracy of
your course knowledge.
You can choose ONE of two ways to impart this information. 1. You can write a journal
entry with this information (please write 1 double-spaced page). Please use proper
grammar and spelling, and it is fine to use “I” in your journal entry. Simply tell me about
the concepts you found the most impactful and why you felt that way. OR 2. You can
3
take a more creative route and create a poem that incorporates the concepts that you
found most impactful for you (creativity can be fun and the positive affect it creates may
help with stress!). If you choose the poem option, please follow these instructions:
• Your poem should be AT LEAST 18 lines of text, with no repeating text
• You should aim to incorporate rhymes in your poem!
• Humour is fine (and appreciated!) so long as it’s respectful
• You need to pack in course content and terminology!
• You can take some slight liberties in terms of grammar, to make things rhyme
• I will not judge you on your poetic skills per se! My sample poem is below.
Sample Poem
For years I’ve worked the cash at a grocery store
Customers curse at me, yell at me, ignore me, what for?
My manager has “display rules” so I have to look happy
Though I’m sad and upset, I surface act so they don’t sack me
My emotions are frayed, I’m exhausted, and have developed a cough
Who does my manager think she is, Taylor Swift? No, I won’t “shake it off”!
I only stay for the pay, and the location is convenient
Continuance commitment is bad though, I need a job with more meaning!
I’d apply to law school, but that means a hard math test
Stereotype threat says since I’m female, I won’t do my best
I need a strong female role model, someone on my side
On that note, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, will you be my guide?
Regardless of what job my future may hold for me
Key to my happiness is a feeling of authenticity
Tasks aligned with my values, interests, and that ideally are fun
With autonomous motivation (from SDT), to my job I will run!
To cope with job stressors, as some there will invariably be
Seeing friends, walking dogs, taking photos, psychological detachment is key!
