Persuasive Speech; Challenges Facing Public Schools
Problem
Does this paper focus on how poverty has become the most significant challenge facing
public schools? Poverty is simply the extreme of someone lacking the primary essential resources
that is a requirement for the sustainability of the minimum standard of living. Indeed, in the
education sector, especially among the many public schools located in different geographical
areas, the subject of poverty is the biggest problem. Statistics have proven that around 22% of the
U.S. children lives in poverty level. Due to such difficulties facing the students, there is also an
increased dropout level. The necessities, including food, sleep, and clothing, tends to lower the
potential of the students in academics. Green Bay is a school with a potential school board, but
most of the kids are under the poverty gap. Also, out of five kids, with free lunch are more than
three. It is through the problem of poverty; there is also an increased population in individual
schools.
Furthermore, there is indeed an interconnection between the world outside and the
classroom. People believe and make assumptions about learning and the world such that styles of
knowledge and family background are not critical factors for performance. However, those
assumptions are not exact since learning in classrooms is directly proportional to those factors
outside. Additionally, the problem of poverty among public schools affects the students, the world
education gap, and the performance of the schools directly. The following are the cause of the
above problem, its widespread and also the impact.
Causes
Primarily, the issue of income disparities among the largest population. Most of the highincome earners are entitled to be giving birth to fewer children as compared to those fewer income
earners. Thus, students of the fewer income earners will concentrate on one public school hence
increasing their population. The problem of increased poverty emerges, thus contributing to poor
performance. The teachers face various challenges of teaching a multitude of students in one class
as compared to the students in kindergarten who are less in a classroom. Also, those students from
a humble background are forcefully divided duties to find school fees and other bills. Students
cannot focus on their education since some get tired. Therefore, such challenges contribute to poor
performance.
Likewise, the issue of peer-pressured has also affected the education sector. As a problem
of poverty, some students work in malls, and others snick out of schools during weekends. The
environmental factors of the students expose them to drugs and other immoral behaviors. Such
students get no interest in education, and some engage in fights and other criminal activities due
to drug influence.
Widespread
Similarly, poverty has led to stagnant economic growth since for a society to succeed, there
must be more input on educational skills. Poverty has contributed to the income gap as those people
who earn high incomes take their students to kindergarten, where there are best facilities. Students
coming from a poor background go to the lowest schools with little or no performance.
Solutions; Steps to the audience
Additional support that NCSL, National Conference of State Legislature gives to students
from a poor background is ensuring programs of life skills and practical studies are the significant
involvement in the study units. It is an approach that implements and takes the task in the United
States through its law center of education.
Possible obstacles
Incase chances arise from any problem experienced in the above solution. The government
has also helped in jump starting students for postsecondary education. The possible obstacles
facing learning institutions among the poor include lack learning materials, incompetence in
training, lack of enough income to provide required fees and amount for learning amongst students.
Speaker’s primer
I would listen to their views in times of disagreement; inquire more about the background
status of the audience for purposes of being choosy in the words I would use.
Attention step
I would emphasize the use of personification, especially when imitating those drug addicts in
society. Also, I will be using a sample of my audience to illustrate the gap existing between the
poor and the wealthy income earners.
Other requirements
I choose the above topic to provide knowledge, equip learners, and intellectually with the
basic understanding of poverty and interconnection with academic performance. Learners require
online educative materials to enable in acquisition of knowledge and other educational activities.
Co-curriculum activities are introduced into the learning system to boost the learners
understanding. For instance, swimming and other recreational activities break the boredom and
enhance talent building.
Conclusion
In honest opinion, a request to total cooperation in ensuring we create a sophisticated
workforce for our economic growth is encouraged as a gateway to increasing learners’
understanding and creating a self reliance capability. Learning as a process, it involve development
from one stage to another over a period of time. Throughout the learning engagements, learners
acquire skills that are important in team building, leadership skills and maintenance of social
network.
Recommendation
It is also essential that schools can encourage the students by anti-poverty strategies and
other welfare agencies that will enable the increased well-being of the students. The learning
institutions can create free learning channels for students affected by poverty. These students
should undergo proper care and handling to enhance their self esteem and create equality in a
learning environment.

General purpose: To inform
Specific purpose: To inform my audience about fair trade chocolate
INTRODUCTION
Attention-getter: Raise your hand if you have had any chocolate today. Raise your hand if you have
had any chocolate in the last week. How about the last month? Or the last year?
Relevance to audience: For those of you who raised your hands and even those of you who didn’t,
what you are about to hear will surely make you think twice before the next time you eat a chocolate
bar.
Credibility material: As a member of the Christian Social Justice Committee, I have become
concerned about fair trade chocolate.
Thesis statement: Fair trade chocolate is becoming a global concern in our culture today.

2. 2. It allows for adequate levels of pay for all employees in industry.
3. 3. It prevents the practice of slavery in all associated industries.
4. 4. It ensures the rights of children (“About”).
A. B.
Fair trade chocolate is chocolate that is harvested and prepared by individuals
who receive fair wages for the work that they do.
Transition: Second, why is chocolate such an issue?
I.
II. Chocolate harvested by slaves is such a big issue because of the limited product
alternatives for consumption in the United States.
A. A.
David Bastone estimates, in his 2007 book Not for Sale: The Return of the Global
Slave Trade-and How We Can Fight It, that there are more than 27 million modern-day
slaves throughout the world (Bastone).
B. B.
The manner in which the chocolate-harvesting slaves are procured as well as how
they are treated is horrendous.
1. 1. According to the 2001 documentary Slavery, these slaves are sometimes bought
from parents for as little as $30.
2. 2. They are also taken from street corners in neighboring countries after being
promised food and wealth (Slavery).
A. C.
Ghana, Africa grows cocoa for export (Slavery).

2. 2. It is also the largest among the slave industry (Slavery).
A. D.

A. A.
The Internet is the best place to purchase chocolate.
1. 1. Sweetearth.com deals specifically with fair trade.
2. 2. Divine Chocolate at Divinechocolateusa.com does as well.
A. B.
The Mustard Seed, which is located in downtown Columbia, is a fair trade-only
store that sells Divine Chocolate.
Kaldi’s Coffee, which is located in downtown Columbia right next to the Mustard
B. C.
Seed, also sells fair trade chocolate.
C. D.
Some common chocolates are not fair trade.
1. 1. Hershey, Nestle, Mars, and Lindt chocolates make up more than 75 percent of the
chocolate that most stores carry (Slavery).
2. 2. These brands of chocolate are not slave free (Slavery).
Transition: As you can see, free trade chocolate is available locally and via the Internet.
CONCLUSION
Summary statement: Fair trade chocolate has become a big issue throughout the world today. Now
you know what fair trade chocolate is, why chocolate has become an issue, and where you can purchase
fair trade chocolate.
Audience response statement: You can now make an informed choice to eat responsible chocolate or
not.
Closing statement: I will leave you today with a gift. This is a sample of Divine Chocolate. This is
what chocolate should taste like because no little kid was forced to make it for you. This chocolate is
slave free and guilt free. It is Divine!
