Illustrations of Readers’ Sympathy in The Metamorphosis
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is a narration on the travails of the main character, Gregor
Samsa after he is transformed into a bug, unable to walk uprightly as before. The novel revolves
around how the family of Gregor Samsa struggles to acclimatize to the demands of living with a
helpless character, a sharp contrast to the normal human way of life. Kafka has in several
instances deeply engaged the readers through the description of particular scenes in a bid to aid
the empathizing with the troubles of Gregor Samsa. From the sufferings of Gregor Samsa to that
of his employers and the extended family, Franz Kafka keeps the readers in a state of sympathy
with what has befallen the family of the main character with each bearing the brunt of the
transformation.
Gregor Samsa in the beginning is introduced after having woken up only to find that he has been
conformed to crawling. In this particular instance, Gregor Samsa believes that he is only
dreaming and wishes that could return to sleeping to evade the nightmare that has befallen him.
Kafka describes his struggle to coming into terms with reality. He describes how Gregor Samsa
cannot return to his favorite sleeping position and how this moment is the initial revelation of the
morphing into a bug. “No matter how hard he threw himself onto his right side, he always rolled
again onto his back.” (Kafka 4) In this scenario, Kafka draws the readers’ attention into the
helpless state of Gregor Samsa, inviting them to empathize with his troubles from the onset. This
scene prepares the readers for the series of issues that are set to befall the entire family.
Gregor Samsa is the breadwinner of the family and this is also another area of concern that the
Kafka draws the attention of the readers through highlighting the degree of loss that the family
will experience as a result of his impairment. When Gregor Samsa is late for work on the day of
metamorphosis, everyone in the family is worried. Franz Kafka emphasizes the looming crisis
through projecting how each family member is concerned. “At the other side door, however, his
sister knocked lightly. ‘Gregor? Are you all right?”(Kafka 6) This state of the fracas is one that
the reader sympathizes with and also serves as an informing sign of the escalating crisis of the
family due to its full dependence on Gregor Samsa’s wellbeing.
The main character, Gregor Samsa is also fully dedicated to his work and his absence is enough
to bring the whole place at a standstill. Such is his immense relevance to his employers that the
manager has to come over if he happens to miss. This is also a worrying issue that further
troubles Gregor Samsa. He can hardly comprehend why he is the only one tasked with
performing the instrumental tasks that are key to the running of the firm. “Why was Gregor the
only one condemned to work in a firm where at the slightest lapse someone immediately
attracted the greatest suspicion?” (Kafka 11) The exhibition of Gregor Samsa’s frustrations is an
attempt by Kafka to widen the scope of his troubles, and further highlight how his impairment
will also affect the running of the company.
Kafka also illustrates the frantic demeanor of the manager upon receiving the news of Gregor
Samsa’s inability to attend to work. This is also meant to indicate how despite Gregor Samsa’s
importance to the company, he is still undermined and there is no sympathy shown to him even
in times of need by the employer.
Throughout the book, Franz Kafka attracts the reader to empathize with the main character.
Gregor Samsa is an indicator of how a shift in the life of a single person can affect the lives of
numerous others who are fully dependent on him. Kafka, in this regard, seeks to deliver an
understanding of the suffering that is experienced by people such as Gregor Samsa when
unprecedented happenings strike.
