As you know by now, your final exam will be a written essay in which you argue your point of view after
reading a text from your book, just like our previous essays. For this FIVE paragraph essay, you will write
a PROBLEM/SOLUTION short essay on the big problem in the food industry today. You will want to read
at least two selections from you text in Chapter 18: What Should We Eat? The readings start on pg. 417.
After reading at least two essays on the food industry today in your text book, select ONE major
problem in our food industry that you have identified from the readings. Your goal will be to discuss the
problem and propose a solution to the problem, including your readings in your essay as research.
To prepare for your essay, I strongly encourage you to do the following:
1. Read through your research and highlight quote(s) that support your problem-solution
argument. Spend the time now digging through your research and marking page numbers so
that you are not spending time doing this during the exam. You need at least one source for
your problem and one source for your solution.
2. Review MLA citations. You will need to know how to properly include your quote within a
paragraph, to include a citation at the end of the quote.
3. Draft your Works Cited page and print. This is the ONLY thing that you may have written prior to
the exam. You will need to include a Works Cited section at the end of your final exam essay.
4. Review your outline. Know your stance. Be sure that your thesis statement is strong at the end
of your intro paragraph and that you have an intro paragraph, at least three body paragraphs,
and a conclusion paragraph outlined (not written out). I suggest that you PRINT this outline
and study it before the final exam.
