PHY 209L Ashford University Snells Law and Index of Refraction Lab Questions The instruction sheet is provided after the instructional video. Make sure your upload file contains:
Start reading from page 171 until the middle of 178. When you answer question on critical angle, you are done.
The refraction-instruction pdf file has the instructions. Please follow them. Make sure you answer all questions from 171 to 178 as instructed.
The work for all three beams in part I for the air/glass boundary (determining the index of refraction of the material).
The work for Part II at the glass/air boundary.
The average index of refraction of ALL measurements.
The critical angle of the glass/air interface using the average index of refraction for glass.
All of your work will be organized and labeled as one pdf file for upload. Instructions for Refraction
The student will utilize their manual for this lab. Start on page 171 and end
after the calculation for “critical angle” is performed on the top of page 178
and go no further after that.
In Part 1 the student will examine the refraction using Snell’s Law at the air/glass
interface. The table for Part 1 is located on page 175 in your manual. Note: You
may assume for all “reflected angles” that this angle is the same as the angle of
incident. This is called pure specular reflection.
1. Measure the three incident angles for beams 1, 2, and 3 incident at the
air/glass boundary. Try to use enough precision for three significant digits.
2. Label the corresponding beams traveling in the glass 1, 2, and 3 correctly.
Then measure the angle with respect to the normal. These are the refracted
angles or transmission angles. [Note: It is important to correctly label the
beams in the glass to determine the correct angle of refraction within the
glass to perform the correct calculation for Snell’s Law.]
3. Using Snell’s Law, determine the index of refraction for glass for the three
different beams. SHOW ALL WORK!
4. Answer any questions associated with your calculations.
In Part 2 the student will examine the refraction using Snell’s Law at the glass/air
interface (the second interface where the beam leaves the glass. The table for Part 2
is located on page 176 in your manual. Note: You may assume for all “reflected
angles” that this angle is the same as the angle of incident. This is called pure
specular reflection.
3. Notice that these refraction angles are the SAME angles as those incident at
the glass/air interface! Therefore, for each beam, measure the refracted
angles at the air/glass boundary and (label) each as the incident angle on
the glass/air boundary. Now, for each beam at the glass/air boundary,
measure the refracted angle back into air. Label appropriately.
4. For each beam, calculate the index of refraction for glass. Caution: This time
it is glass that is the “incident side”. Use Snell’s Law correctly. SHOW ALL
WORK!
5. Answer all questions following until the middle part of 1 78 as stated above.
6. Make sure that your average is clearly indicated.
7. Calculate the critical angle of the glass/air interface using the average of
ALL measurements. SHOW ALL WORK.
