Project 2: Exploring Discourse Community and Academic Writing (How and Why They Write)
Overview
For our first assignment, you analyzed the ways in which your rhetorical choices (and
understanding of the rhetorical situation) influence and were influenced how and why you write
in your personal life.
For this project, you will explore how the concept of discourse community can help deepen your
understanding of rhetoric and the rhetorical situation. After reading, writing, and discussing
ideas related to discourse communities, genre, and academic writing, you will craft an
exploratory essay to show how disciplines influence the way people write in the academy. To do
this, you will select two different academic texts from two different disciplines (see Module
2Bfinding scholarly sources in the disciplines). Once you have analyzed the texts, you will
write an essay in which you compare and contrast how different disciplines engage in writing.
Your purpose is to inform your audience of the similarities and differences in how and why
they write academic texts.
Process
Step 1: Discipline Selection
Using the resources and readings from class, select two disciplines that you want to explore
under the following disciplinary umbrellas
1. Natural Sciences
2. Social Sciences
3. Arts and Humanities
4. Business and Professional Communication
Step 2: Field Selection
Once you have decided on two disciplines, you will need to narrow your focus. To do so, you
need to pick a field under each discipline. For example, if Social Science was one of the
disciplines I selected, then I could choose Anthropology as a field under this disciplinary
umbrella.

The reason its important to do this is because you will be searching for two journal articles
related to the discipline, and it will be much easier for you to find articles if you know what field
you are searching in.
Step 3: Select Journal Articles and Examine
Use the library database to find two articles (each article must be published in different
journals). In total, you will select four articles (two from one field in one of your two disciplines
and two from one field in the other discipline.

Once you have completed the analyses, you will need to craft a compare and contrast essay,
which includes the following:
Introduction
Write an introductory paragraph with several sentences that do the following:
Discuss the idea of discourse communities and how this concept aids our understanding
of writing as a situated, local, and contextualized practice using research to support your
claims
Introduce the disciplines you have selected for exploration and identify the discourse
community.
Describe how these disciplines construct and disseminate knowledge, what research
methods they use, what they value, how they apprentice students into their disciplines,
etc.
Identify the rhetorical choices that you have decided to discuss and indicate, in general
terms, how they help you meet your purpose for your intended audience.
Body Paragraphs
Each paragraph in the body should have its own topic sentence and a unified focus. For this
essay, you could write one or more paragraphs on each of the rhetorical concepts you selected.
Useful strategies for developing these paragraphs include:
Explain the rhetorical choices of the field and then make claims about how these choices
influence how and why the field writes (again, think knowledge production)

What types of data or evidence is valued?

What types of genres are the most prevalent?
o
What types of questions does the field pursue in research?
o
What style guide does the field use?

Why types of issues do researchers and scholars pursue?
