Overview
For our first assignment, you analyzed the ways in which your rhetorical choices (and
understanding of the rhetorical situation) influence and were influenced how and why you write
in your personal life.
For this project, you will explore how the concept of discourse community can help deepen your
understanding of rhetoric and the rhetorical situation. After reading, writing, and discussing
ideas related to discourse communities, genre, and academic writing, you will craft an
exploratory essay to show how disciplines influence the way people write in the academy. To do
this, you will select two different academic texts from two different disciplines (see Module
2B—finding scholarly sources in the disciplines). Once you have analyzed the texts, you will
write an essay in which you compare and contrast how different disciplines engage in writing.
Your purpose is to inform your audience of the similarities and differences in how and why
“they” write academic texts.
Process
Step 1: Discipline Selection
Using the resources and readings from class, select two disciplines that you want to explore
under the following disciplinary umbrellas
1. Natural Sciences
2. Social Sciences
3. Arts and Humanities

Step 2: Field Selection
Once you have decided on two disciplines, you will need to narrow your focus. To do so, you
