PTSD and Its Affects on Children Presentation Your POWER POINT presentation goal is to educate your audience (classmates & professor) on a problem/topic related to family violence (any area we’ve covered in the class) and lead you to finding solutions as PREVENTION and/or INTERVENTION. I’m going to break down the template from page 13 in your syllabus for you below: 1. What is the problem/topic and purpose of your research? ( PTSD & its affects on children) As you do your research, the information you find should give you the SCOPE of the problem and what is the PURPOSE of your research a. State the problem/topic you are addressing. Give the statistical/factual information here, the prevalence of the problem/topic b. Discuss why you chose this topic. It’s not enough to give a personal opinion about WHY you chose this topic; put on your social worker hat and give a professional opinion regarding WHY this topic is important. What do you see as a social work practitioner as someone who has studied family violence? 2. Present and discuss relevant data that explains your problem/topic also highlight what are some different opinions about and current solutions to the problem/topic? What are researchers saying about the problem? a. Use a variety of sources. What are professionals in this field saying about the topic AND why is their opinion important. b. Be clear in presenting the concepts related to your subject matter. Use the concepts in the textbook – you can italicize for easier identification. (Remember who your audience is) If you are using concepts, theory from the textbook, then you are appropriately applying it to you subject matter and it gives you credibility as an expert on your topic. c. Present alternative opinions than your own on the topic. Are there other experts out there who are discussing contradicting opinion. There may be other researchers who have discovered that the intervention is not effective or possibly there might be a more effective intervention. Maybe there are researchers who are have contradictory ideas of what is causing the problem. For example: If you are looking at financial abuse of the elderly and looking at policies that are available to protect individuals who are nursing homes, there might be some great policies but also there might be policies that actually do more harm and don’t protect the elderly from financial abuse. 3. What are your interpretations of and conclusions about the problem/topic that you believe must be addressed and why? In your professional opinion, after you’ve looked at the research, is there some areas about the problem/topic that should be addressed? Often in the research, there will be an area will discuss how the research could be improved, or areas where the subject could use more research. Use these recommendations to further your critical thinking. a. How are your interpretations supported by the data and research you have found? Does the data support your thesis/assertion/initial thoughts about the problem/topic and interventions available? b. What are your conclusions about the problem/topic and how is this information supported by the data and research you have found? There may be some train of thought that you had not considered. What have you learned from the research in your professional opinion? 4. What can be done to solve the problem? **This is where your prevention/intervention program is introduced. You can either highlight a intervention/program that you’ve already discovered in your research, or CREATE your own FROM the research you’ve done. a. Present potential solutions that may have been tried before and/or your recommended solution. b. Address community resources that are available and/or needed to solve the problem. c. Address what individuals, groups, families, communities, and/or nations can do to solve the problem. d. Discuss potential sources of funding and/or accessing resources. 5. What are the implications of your prevention/intervention program for social work practice? a. Based on your conclusions, state the relevance and impact on the social work profession. In other words, what/how does the social work practitioner/knowledge-base add to this prevention/intervention program? Address SW values & ethics. What about self-determination? Confidentiality? Victim’s Rights? b. State the positive and negative consequences of this impact. *Creativity is encouraged!!
