Overview

Tattooing has a long and varied tradition, dating back 1,000 years. During the early 19th century, the art of tattooing was brought from Polynesia to Europe by sailors, and was mainly the domain of men. In the present day, however, tattooing has become ubiquitous, with both men and women adorning their bodies with tattoos, often as a fashion statement. In fact, in America today, one in five people have tattoos, and 36% of people aged 18-29 have tattoos.

Your Assignment

In this Discussion, you will select a specific image of a tattoo, then post a 500-750 word analysis explaining whether you think it is an example of Fine Art or Folk Art. You will base your analysis on the concepts from the reading and videos.

Step One – Post an Image

First, you must search online for an example of tattooing, and upload it in your response. Then use this image as the basis for your discussion. If you like, you may share images of your own tattoos. In either case, please only select images that are appropriate within the standards of this institution – NO nudity or anything too graphic, and please post images that are easy to discern. High resolution images are preferred.

Step Two: Post in the Class Discussion

In 500-750 words, explain whether the tattoo you chose is an example of fine art or folk art. You must select only one response…not both…and decide whether tattoos are fine art or whether they are folk art. Then cogently justify your choice based on concepts from the reading and videos.

Your answers must be well-written, well-supported, grammatically correct, and free of spelling and punctuation errors. This is a college level assignment!

To help you think about your answer and your responses, consider the following:

• What are the main features of the tattoo?
• What makes it unique?
• What is the level of skill or training required to execute it?
• Is there a tradition behind the design?
• Is the tattoo a symbol of a group?
• What type of statement is being made?

What is the Purpose or Function of the tattoo?

• Social or political commentary?
• Worship or Ritual?
• Commemoration?
• Persuasion?

You are also welcome to do more research about the nature of fine art and folk art, but please cite your sources and do not plagiarize or cut and paste information from the internet!

Step Three: Respond to Your Classmates

Next, review the posts of your classmates. Post a cogent and thoughtful response to a post by two different classmates (at least 100 words each). Consider the key issues that underpin this topic, including skill level, training, traditions, personal choices, etc.

• Do you agree or disagree with their reasoning for deciding whether their tattoo is fine art or folk art. Explain why or why not.
• Did they leave out something important? If you think so, introduce this to the discussion.
• Did you find something interesting in the post, but you don’t fully understand? Politely ask them to clarify for you.

Overview

In his influential book, Ways of Seeing, John Berger states:

“Today we see the art of the past as nobody saw it before. We actually perceive it in a different way….The invention of the camera changed the way people saw. The visible came to mean something different to them.”

During the last century, photography has had a profound effect on the creation, perception and interpretation of works of art. Painters, including Chuck Close and David Hockney, often use photography in creative ways in their work.

We often take linear perspective for granted, but it’s not the only way to construct space in a two-dimensional image.

Your Assignment

In this writing assignment, you will submit a 600-750 word (approximately one page) short analysis (aka “tiny” paper), in which you examine and discuss the photographic “joiners” of contemporary artist David Hockney. This format requires you to condense your ideas and focus only on those that are directly relevant to the topic.

Step Two: Write your Reflection

In 600 to 750 words, reflect on the reasoning behind Hockney’s approach to making joiners and how they change our experience of seeing. As you reflect, select one of the joiner images (below) and compare it with The School of Athens (also below). Be sure to include direct references to specific areas of the image you select and discuss.

Address the following issues and support your ideas with careful observations of the images:

1. How is the execution of a joiner is similar to or different from the way a painter makes a painting using brush and paints?
2. How is perspective in a joiner very different from that in a traditional painting, such as The School of Athens, by Raphael, below?
3. How does this approach impact the way a viewer experiences time in the image?
