Im trying to learn for my English class and Im stuck. Can you help?
This semester we have looked at a variety of texts in the context of COMPARISON. We have compared texts in class with other texts in class; we have compared texts with our individual experiences; we have compared texts with contemporary society. We have done all of this with one question in mind: WHY ARE WE STILL READING THIS TODAY?
For your final paper you will do one further comparison. You will compare any one text from this semester (story, poem, excerpt, part of a story or novel, essay, etc.) with any other outside pop-culture media (book, story, poem, song, film, television show, play, etc.) from the late 20th or early 21st centuries. While brainstorming your idea for this final paper, you will want to reconsider the central question, why are we still reading this today?
As part of the brainstorming and writing process, you may want to consider some of the following questions. These are not intended to be answered explicitly in your paper, but can serve as a tool for narrowing down the focus of your paper:
What are the important themes, ideas, impressions and images that you find in these two stories? What do these stories have in common? What are their major differences?
Is there a common message behind these stories?
Why were these stories written and who were they written for?
How does your comparative work (the one from outside of class) reflect the course question?
Paper Requirements (25%)
2 primary sources these will include the work you have selected from the class readings and the outside text with which you have chosen to compare that work.
3 secondary sources (minimum) secondary sources should be CRITICAL sources; they will be used to defend your thesis statement and should revolve around a key term, category, or theme you will discuss in your paper. They do not have to be directly connected to either of the primary sources, although this is an option.
Bibliography this should be in MLA8 format. Please refer to PurdueOWL for help with your specific types of sources. We will go over the most commonly used sources in class, but you will need to go back in on your own to verify your particular sources are done correctly. Remember that your bibliography should be presented on its own page and all sources should be listed in alphabetical order by the first word of the citation.
Length and Format Double-spaced, size 12 Times New Roman, Left-Justify/Left-Align; 5-7 pages (not including the bibliography).
Presentation Requirements (15%)
10-minute presentation This presentation is not a presentation of your paper, but rather the subject of your paper. You are expected to present major similarities and differences you have found on the two sources as well as letting the class know what you believe the specific focus will be for your final paper. Explain how you arrived at deciding on this particular focus.
A visual This can be a poster, a handout, or a digital presentation (PowerPoint or similar). It should highlight the similarities and differences in the two works as well as show your progress in developing your paper.
A question You should prepare a question to ask the class about your presentation. This could be something that you are looking to answer in your paper, or it could be a more open ended question about the subject matter you are discussing. The question should not be a simple yes/no question, and if it is, it must include a why component.
The breakdown of the Presentation/Exam grade is as follows:
15% – Presentation Skills/Etiquette time, reading, clarity, is it audible?
15% – Visual Power Point or similar, poster, handout, video clips, notes on board.
40% – Content works discussed, similarities, differences, clear point, your question, etc.
30% – Written exam two questions based on watching presentations, open notes, 20-30 mins.
