4) Understanding Emotion – a continuing dialogue

Listen to Invisobilia (NPR) Podcast from June 1, 2017 titled “Emotions: Part 1”: http://www.npr.org/2017/06/01/530928414/emotions-p…

~ it is sometimes easier to listen while driving, doing chores like folding laundry or doing dishes!

  1. What struck you about the contents of this podcast?
  2. Some of the ideas about emotions and the way trauma impacts the brain might be controversial. How did you react to these ideas?
  3. How would you challenge them or how might you be intrigued to explore more?

NOTE: Please be respectful of different viewpoints, experiences, and reflections. Be open-minded in order to learn from each other’s

points
of view.

Required Readings

  • Halpern & Tramontin: Chapters 8 & 9 (PFA, Early Interventions)
  • Resource: PFA Field Guide
  • Resource: DHHS – Disaster Behavioral Health guidance
  • Resource: SAMHSA – DTAC
  • Resource: CDC – Disaster mental health

https://www.nctsn.org/resources/psychological-first-aid-pfa-field-operations-guide-2nd-edition

REFERENCE: This is a critical resource for disaster mental health response — The National Center for PTSD’s Psychological First Aid (PFA) Field Operations Guide, developed jointly with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). You can download the Field Guide as a PDF from this website. There is also a mobile app for field use. We will review the core actions.

This is the national model of PFA adopted by, for example, the Medical Reserve Corps. It is also the primary model for government run field response in the state of PA.

The Red Cross model is similar, though not identical, and is intended more for Shelter Operations.

I have attached the Psychoeducation Handouts that are an Appendix to the Field Guide. These handouts can be used

with
individuals during response to educate them about normal reactions to abnormal events.
